After three consecutive entries in the franchise featuring science-fiction elements and exo-suits, Call of Duty fans were ready for the series to return to its roots. While some believed Activision would continue pursuing sci-fi Call of Duty games, at least one fan had faith that 2017's Call of Duty, now known as Call of Duty: WW2, would be a return to the "boots on the ground" gameplay that started it all.

Last year, Reddit user Thermikz accurately predicted that Sledgehammer's 2017 Call of Duty game would not be Advanced Warfare 2 as some expected, but rather a return to the franchise's roots. While Thermikz didn't predict the setting of Call of Duty: WW2, it's safe to say his prediction that the game would be a return to "boots on the ground" gameplay has been proven true.

"2017 is gonna be boots on the ground. I've been calling it for months before this reveal trailer. Activision is not stupid, money hungry yes, but not stupid. They see the 100,000+ dislikes in the first day of reveal. They know [Sledgehammer Games] is the start of another three year cycle between the Devs, and it's gonna be the start of a more traditional style of CoD . They'll be seen as the savior but we're not dumb, and it's a been a long time coming."

What's interesting about Thermikz's prediction is that it points to the overwhelming dislike for Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare's reveal trailer as the reason why Sledgehammer is bringing the series back to its roots. However, since Call of Duty games have a relatively lengthy three year development cycle, it's likely that the studio decided on the setting well before the Infinite Warfare reveal trailer dropped.

Fans have offered other explanations as to why Activision has decided to let Sledgehammer's new Call of Duty game be set during World War 2. One of the most prevalent theories is that Activision saw the success EA had with Battlefield 1's historical setting, and decided to cash in on the craze. Again, the fact that Call of Duty games have a three year development cycle pretty much debunks this theory, as it means Call of Duty: WW2 was in development before Battlefield 1 was even announced.

Ultimately, neither Battlefield 1's success nor the dislike for Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare's reveal trailer can take credit for why Call of Duty: WW2 features a historical setting, but even so, they helped Thermikz make an accurate prediction about the future of the franchise. And if we go by Thermikz's system, the fact that the Call of Duty: WW2 trailer is the most-liked out of any Call of Duty game means that the next few games will also stay away from future warfare.

Call of Duty: WW2 will launch on November 3rd for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
