Fans of the Call of Duty franchise are wanting to see a return of a forgotten feature found in Call of Duty: WW2. The Call of Duty series has never had any issues looking to its own past for inspiration for its future, and that could certainly be the case here.

While 2017's Call of Duty: WW2 wasn't the most popular game in the franchise, it represented a breath of fresh air amidst an era of modern and futuristic warfare titles, and was the series' first return to World War 2 since 2008. As Sledgehammer Games' second attempt at a mainline title, it tried new things, such as Call of Duty: WW2's Headquarters hub area. It didn't always pay off, but the risks from the developer were admirable since it would have been easier to take a safer route and continue the status quo.

Redditor S-t-a-r-s-h-o-t redownloaded Call of Duty: WW2 and rediscovered that players could make their own weapon camos, placing smaller pieces of artwork onto each weapon to form a fully unique camo. Call of Duty weapon camos have always been an important part of the series, with every game offering unique camos for players to unlock through challenges. More recent titles have also locked some camos behind a microtransaction paywall, which has proven controversial with some in the community. However, a return of the feature in Sledgehammer Games' next effort could be a step forward for the series.

While users in the thread acknowledged that it would be a useful feature to have, others were quick to point out the reasons it was removed. Such a powerful tool has the potential to be used for wrongdoing, with many players using it to create inappropriate and hateful imagery to apply to their weapons. In years gone by, players were able to create their own Call of Duty emblems, with that feature removed for similar reasons.

As the most recent release, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 featured a hybrid of challenges and paid skins, a system that the developers of the series seem happy with. Allowing players too much customization would leave a lot of money on the table for developers, so it would be a brave choice to bring back the feature. Because of this, it's unlikely that full camo customization makes a return any time soon, at least in its Call of Duty: WW2 form. With Sledgehammer Games in charge of Call of Duty 2023, players will have to wait and see how the developer chooses to approach its camo system in the upcoming title.
