Call of Duty: Warzone's big Season 1 update is finally here, integrating the battle royale with Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War and adding the highly-anticipated Rebirth Island map for a limited time. And while much of the focus has been on the new Call of Duty: Warzone map and the Black Ops Cold War guns being added to the BR, the Season 1 update also made some changes to Verdansk.

After downloading the Call of Duty: Warzone Season 1 update, players will notice that there is now a large hole in the middle of the Verdansk airport. If they drop inside the hole, they will discover a bunker that has apparently been hiding underneath the airport this entire time. The new Call of Duty: Warzone airport bunker seems to typically have pretty good loot and is much easier to access than other bunkers, so expect it to be a high-traffic area for the time being.

The new Call of Duty: Warzone Verdansk bunker is good news for fans of the original map. It's a good indication that the developers aren't going to abandon Verdansk in favor of Rebirth Island or another new map, but rather, will continue to iterate on the original map to give players fresh experiences.

While the mysterious airport bunker is perhaps the most notable example of this, this is apparent in other facets of Call of Duty: Warzone as well. For example, the Season 1 update has added a huge number of Black Ops Cold War guns to the battle royale, which all go a long way in shaking up the meta and keeping things from getting stale. It's clear that Verdansk is still going to be the primary focus moving forward, and that's definitely good news for fans of the BR.

Something to keep in mind, though, is that a new map could be introduced later on that does eventually take the focus away from Verdansk. Other battle royale games have had to introduce new maps to keep players engaged, and eventually the same will likely happen with Warzone. Rebirth Island is a small map that's only expected to be in the game for a limited time, so it doesn't exactly fit this bill, but a different map could very well accomplish that.

Rumors have indicated that Treyarch plans on stitching together the Fireteam maps to create a new Call of Duty: Warzone map, with a release roughly around the battle royale's one year anniversary. Nothing official has been announced to back up these claims, but it wouldn't be all that surprising. After all, Verdansk itself is made up of a bunch of Ground War maps.

Regardless, fans of Call of Duty: Warzone's Verdansk map don't need to worry about the developers abandoning it for now, and it should continue to evolve moving forward, which is good news for fans.

Call of Duty: Warzone is out now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
