The Modern Warfare 3 Season 1 Reloaded update launches on January 17 with the new Rio map and three new game modes: Team Gunfight, Headquarters, and Infected. Rio is a new medium-sized 6v6 map that takes place in a shopping center in Brazil. An indoor mall is prominently situated in the middle of the map, with a plaza, tram station, market, and residential spaces surrounding it. According to Sledgehammer Games, the mall itself rises toward its center, which means players may defend the high ground with a "king of the hill approach."

Team Gunfight is a 6v6 version of Modern Warfare 3's Gunfight mode with the same rule set. All Team Gunfight players will spawn with the same randomized loadout at the start of the match, and the loadout will change over time until the match ends. Moreover, Headquarters will be added on day one of Modern Warfare 3 Season 1 Reloaded. In Headquarters, players must secure an objective and hold it for as long as possible with limited respawns, and the objective will periodically rotate around the map.

Alongside the debut of Team Gunfight, Modern Warfare 2's Infected game mode will return in Modern Warfare 3 with the Season 1 Reloaded update. The Infected game mode starts with one player being Infected, with opposing players aiming to survive until the end of the match. The chances of survival greatly diminish as more players become Infected in a match.

Patch notes for the Season 1 Reloaded update will be released prior to its release on January 17, so players can expect more details about new content arriving soon. Sledgehammer Games will continue to release playlist updates on Thursdays as well. Fans won't have to wait much longer for Season 2, since Modern Warfare 3 leaks suggest the next season will begin in early February with new weapons.
