The player count for Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone 2 has dropped dramatically since release day. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 came out in October 2022, with Warzone 2 releasing in November alongside the Season 1 update.

Both games appeared to be massive success stories at launch, as Modern Warfare 2 surpassed $800 million in its opening weekend, with Warzone 2 exceeding 25 million players within five days of its release. However, it seems like the user base for these games has gone down significantly since release, and new data confirms that it recently dropped to a record low point.

As reported by CharlieIntel, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone 2 peaked at under 90k players on Steam, making it the largest decrease since both games launched. The given post is from March 28, with the peak concurrent player count listed as 87,621. At the time of this writing, there are 73,873 users playing Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone 2 on Steam, but the 24-hour peak has reduced further to 86,043. It’ll be interesting to see how this number changes in the coming weeks, but it’ll probably not reach anywhere close to the all-time peak of 488,897.

CharlieIntel also makes note of the daily peak number being much lower than competitors Destiny 2 and Apex Legends, as they have a 24-hour peak concurrent count of 141,409 and 572,373 gamers respectively. Bungie launched a new expansion for Destiny 2 called Lightfall in February, which may have contributed to its higher number.

Players in the comments section of the post share several reasons for this number being relatively low, with many blaming the SBMM system implemented in these Call of Duty titles. Fans also point to how Activision and Infinity Ward refused to add some highly-requested features like the classic Call of Duty mini-map, with a lot of complaints being thrown around about other aspects of the game. It appears that some users also dislike the way Modern Warfare 2 handles playlists, as the popular Shipment 24/7 playlist is regularly removed from the game.

Coming to Warzone 2, a few users share complaints about limited-time game modes and the monetization practices followed by Activision, with one fan claiming that it never had the charm of the original Warzone. Overall, it looks like Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone 2 players have a lot of reasons for disliking the current state of the games.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and Call of Duty: Warzone 2 are out now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
