The recently released Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is smashing sales records for Activision. As announced earlier today, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is the top-selling new game of 2019, the biggest selling digital opening in Activision's history, has the highest digital sales on PS4 for a three day period, and has sold more in the first three days than any other Call of Duty game this entire console generation. It's also the biggest Call of Duty PC launch ever, with Activision raking in a staggering $600 million in Modern Warfare's first three days of release.
Activision has pointed out that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare has "more than doubled" box office opening for Joker, and it's also worth pointing out that its sales are outpacing Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 as well. Black Ops 4 made $500 million in its first weekend, so Modern Warfare has already made $100 million more than last year's Call of Duty. And since Black Ops 4 was the best-selling game of 2018, it seems safe to assume that Modern Warfare will be this year's best-selling game.
The massive sales success of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare isn't all that surprising. The Call of Duty: Modern Warfare reviews have been mostly positive, with many coming away impressed by the campaign and multiplayer. That being said, the game has also earned its fair share of criticism, mainly targeting the Spec Ops co-op mode and certain aspects about the multiplayer that hasn't pleased all Call of Duty fans.
Infinity Ward has been listening to fan feedback and has already made some changes to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare in response. For example, there were some fans who were annoyed that they were forced to play on both the big and small maps in standard multiplayer. Infinity Ward quickly changed the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare multiplayer playlists to give fans the option to only play on smaller 6v6 maps or the larger 10v10 maps.
Moving forward, the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare experience should improve as issues are addressed and new content is added to the game. All Call of Duty: Modern Warfare multiplayer DLC maps will be free, and leaks point to the return of classic maps, so fans should have a lot to look forward to.
