Call of Duty is the series that keeps on going, regularly dropping at least one new title per year for its fans and devoted playerbase, and as it has progressed, it has had to continuously reinvent itself, adding new features and modes to keep up with the trends of the day. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is no exception, with old updates and new features like the Tomogunchi alike rolling out regularly in an effort to bring joy to the players who keep the franchise around. With a game this big, it should be no surprise that, sometimes, problems slip through the cracks.

Of all games in the franchise, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare has released during perhaps one of the more difficult times in gaming history for a game like itself. It is a huge franchise continuation that must hold its core appeal even as the playerbase grows more hostile towards conventions that Activision often puts in its games to squeeze more money from them. The game is certainly not helped by the glitches that it often gets, and especially not by ones as big as this.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and the companies behind it have not been in its playerbase's good graces lately, largely due to the ongoing tease of Warzone that has fans foaming at the mouth. A far bigger problem has been discovered however, as players are not getting XP awarded for completing matches. The problem seems to be wide reaching, with fans responding in anger when Infinity Ward officially announced the problem on Twitter. As of the writing of this article, Infinity Ward is looking into the problem and attempting to fix it, but it is still ongoing, and many players have decided to stop playing Modern Warfare until it is resolved.

The glitch comes at a particularly bad time, as the problem began on Sunday during a double XP weekend, which, obviously, players could not reap the full benefits of. While glitches of this magnitude do not necessarily prevent players from playing the game, they do eliminate a big draw of the game: progression through play. And it is not the first time a bug of this severity has swept Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, as not so long ago players could not reload their guns, something which very much prevented them from playing the game in any meaningful way.

Bugs like this are only to be expected with a game that is as large and updates as frequently as Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, and they are often on a smaller scale. A recent bug prevented Capture the Flag players from grabbing their team's flag if dropped by a teammate, and while certainly problematic, it was not on a game shattering scale, just an inconvenience.

This bug is a much bigger deal, and despite being an honest mistake, it has understandably irked players, with each glitch and questionable design choice pushing Activision and its series further and further from their good graces. While many of the memes surrounding Call of Duty: Modern Warfare focus on the microtransactions and interference brought in by Activision, it may not be too long that constant glitches find their way into the meme rotation as well.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is available for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
