  • Sledgehammer Games is taking over development for the remaining Zombies content, as Treyarch focuses on its next project.

Treyarch confirmed that it has shifted focus from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3's Zombies mode to a new project, presumably Call of Duty 2024. This might come as expected news for fans of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Zombies, which has suffered from a lack of content in recent months.

Following the reveal of Call of Duty's Season 2 content back in February, Zombies fans expressed their disapproval at what many thought was a lackluster update for the mode. Zombies received no content with the launch of Season 2 and only received limited content later in a mid-season update. The newly launched Season 3 expansion gives Zombies a similar level of attention, leading fans to wonder whether the mode is nearly dead in the water. It seems that may be the case.

Sledgehammer releases the patch notes for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3's Season 3 update, which launched on Wednesday, April 3rd.

Call of Duty news Twitter account charlieINTEL revealed that Treyarch explained during a recent creator call it had set its sights on "something exciting on the horizon" and that Sledgehammer Games had taken over development for remaining Zombies content. This follows previous news that Treyarch apparently had no new enemies or perks planned for Modern Warfare 3 Zombies as of February, which seemed to hint that the mode had wrapped development on major content. This was likely due to Treyarch diverting more resources to work on Call of Duty 2024 and its presumed Zombies mode.

Zombies fans are still set to receive a limited offering of content later on in Modern Warfare 3's Season 3 era. In a mid-season update, the mode will get a new story mission, Dark Aether rift, warlord, and classified schematics. This is an identical offering to Season 2's lackluster Zombies content, so fans can probably expect a similar or slightly lesser haul in future Seasons while Treyarch works on its approaching Call of Duty release.

Next Call of Duty Likely Has a Zombies Mode

Not much is known about Treyarch's next title, but previous rumors claimed that Call of Duty 2024's single-player mode will utilize an open-world approach more robust than the one seen in Modern Warfare 3's controversial campaign mode. Additionally, a Zombies mode is heavily expected to be included seeing that Zombies creator Treyarch is leading the game's development.

Insiders claim that Call of Duty 2024 is titled Call of Duty Black Ops Gulf War and takes place in the early 1990s. A Call of Duty dataminer claimed to reveal the game's list of launch weapons, which included popular guns from that era like the M16A2, AK-74, Beretta M9, and other weapons that Call of Duty fans are probably familiar with.
