Highlights

  • Fans want longer timer options in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Zombies to have more time to gear up and progress.
  • Different playlists could cater to different player preferences, including longer matches, no timer, and solo modes.
  • Completely removing the timer in the default version would negatively impact the mode's balance and challenge, but a variety of alternate playlists could please all kinds of players.

Though Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Zombies has been a major success in terms of player count, fans certainly have their share of criticism about the mode. While there are obviously players who only want round-based Zombies content and are making bad faith arguments about the mode, those that have given MWZ a fair chance have been able to point out some key flaws. Storytelling is one of them, as is lost loot in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Zombies due to disconnects. Fans have suggested various MWZ loot improvements and balancing changes while criticizing the exfil rework as well, though above all else, many have been quick to share their dislike for the timer.

As an extraction mode built around loot that resembles Call of Duty: Warzone’s DMZ, the concept of a timer and a storm that force players to leave the match after a certain amount of time is an essential mechanic. However, not only is this a tough pill to swallow for round-based fans who are used to playing forever, but many have understandably been upset by just how short the timer is. Having 45 minutes to gear up and become strong enough for the Tier 3 zone feels impossible for some players, and needing to constantly start fresh has been more annoying for some fans than anything else. However, with some liking the quick, casual experience MWZ currently provides, a compromise is needed, and having multiple playlists feels like the best way to achieve that.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Zombies Can Please Everyone With Playlists

Types of Playlists That Would Please Call of Duty Zombies Fans

While Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War’s LTMs saw Treyarch experimenting with alternative forms of gameplay, Modern Warfare 3 Zombies could add some permanent playlists, much like how some version of Plunder is often available at all times in Warzone. These alternate playlists could be aimed directly at addressing the fan base’s complaints, providing different ways to play the game.

The most obvious playlists would target the timer in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Zombies. Players could still have the default 45 minute setting to choose from, but also a long match option that brings that time to an hour and 30 minutes. A playlist that completely removes the timer would be another possible route to take, as this way players could grind camos or complete contracts for as long as they want, exiling whenever they have had enough. If a no timer playlist did come, though, disabling MWZ’s missions within it would make sense so that the existing feeling of progression is maintained.

Another option would be a solo playlist for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Zombies that would see players deploying into Urzikstan with nobody else in the match. This would mean they are guaranteed to be able to complete the free perk Easter eggs without worrying about others getting there first, and the same can be said for missions. With other players needing to kill the Warlord or Stormcaller in their matches, gamers who need to do the same will find themselves racing to get there first, adding unnecessary pressure when the fights are hard enough on their own. Additionally, a solo playlist could be perfect for camo grinding, as the old exfils of MWZ could return since there would be no risk of several other camo grinders being in the same lobby and crashing the game.

Even more playlists could be added, such as:

  • A playlist with increased special and elite enemy spawns, which would help with camo grinding.
  • A playlist where the entire map is a Tier 3 zone for players who really want to challenge themselves.
  • A playlist where PvP is enabled and players could fight each other for loot like in DMZ.

Why Removing The Timer Completely Would Be Unhealthy For DMZ

Even though it is divisive, removing the timer from the default version of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Zombies would be a poor idea, as the mode is built around it. If it was gone completely, players could speed through all the missions in a few matches, they would never have a reason to engage with Aether storms, and tier 3 would go from a legitimate challenge to a cakewalk since players would get too much time to prepare. Additionally, some players enjoy the mode exactly as it is, and those fans should not be out of luck because others want long or endless matches. To please everyone, a wide variety of playlists is something Treyarch should aim to implement in future seasons.
