Highlights

  • Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Zombies lacks Easter eggs, which is a disappointment for players searching for hidden secrets in the game mode.
  • The few secrets that do exist in MW3 Zombies, such as rune doors and a side Easter egg involving a vault, provide some fun, but the best Zombies maps offer far more secrets to find.
  • Adding music Easter eggs, Aether Bunnies that allow teleportation to hidden areas, and Wonder Weapon build quests would enhance the gameplay experience in MW3 Zombies while also being easy to finish before the time runs out.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Zombies has been a pleasant surprise for fans of Treyarch’s classic co-op offering. While nobody wants it to fully replace round-based offerings, most players seem to be enjoying it as an alternative, as though it takes time to learn there is plenty to do. Contracts are fun and straightforward, the higher tier zones offer legitimately challenging gameplay, and the three-act missions system means that more players will pay attention to Call of Duty Zombies’ story than ever before. Having one huge map instead of regularly going through load screens to change zones like in Outbreak is also a plus. However, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Zombies is not flawless.

Alongside some players struggling to learn how to play the mode due to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3’s lackluster accessibility, many have pointed out one thing that it lacks: Easter eggs. While Treyarch was up front about there not being a main quest Easter egg in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Zombies, as pulling off such a quest with a few dozen players spread throughout the map was not feasible, it also promised many secrets. Unfortunately, though the mode is still new and more things could possibly be discovered, the mode lacks Easter eggs, meaning that Outbreak’s biggest flaw remains intact.

The Easter Eggs in MW3 Zombies Are Fun, But There Aren’t Enough

As players grind out missions to unlock the Bone Collector skin and acquire schematics for Wonder Weapons, they will likely run into the few secrets that Treyarch has scattered throughout Urzikstan. There are runes that players can shoot to open up portals that let them transport themselves around the map, as well as dog houses where pieces of meat can be traded for a loyal Hellhound companion. There is also one fairly lengthy side Easter egg involving a vault that can be opened by using a device at various sectors around the map, and more content like this would have been ideal. Unfortunately, there do not seem to be many more secrets to find in Urzikstan beyond this.

Black Ops Cold War ’s Outbreak mode , which was the first attempt at an open-world Zombies experience, was also criticized for its lack of side Easter eggs. An Easter egg to unlock casettes for the music player was added post-launch, and a jumpscare Easter egg that saw a fiery demon charging at players could be found, but like MWZ there were very few secrets to find.

Possible Easter Eggs That Could Be Added to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Zombies

While Treyarch prioritizing gameplay over side quests is understandable in a mode that features a DMZ-like timer, as gamers will not have much time to complete puzzles since the Aether Storm is always approaching, the vault Easter egg is proof that some side quests are absolutely doable. While a complex puzzle that changes the map in some way is out of the question, as it risks impacting the experience of other players, there are three side Easter egg formats that come to mind for Modern Warfare 3 Zombies.

The first is Call of Duty Zombies’ beloved music Easter eggs. While triggering map-wide music for an entire lobby of players may be off the cards, letting players find three cassettes or Aether Bunnies to trigger music for only their squad could work well. New songs from Kevin Sherwood and Zombies’ various singers would be incredible, but if there is not enough time for them to be written, classic tracks could be brought back. Letting players trigger “115” in one part of the map, “Beauty of Annihilation” in another, and so on could go a long way to adding some extra personality to MWZ. Speaking of Aether Bunnies, learning from the secrets involving the demonic blue rabbit in Black Ops Cold War could add some fun to the mix. If players find one of these Bunnies when exploring, letting them teleport to new areas like in Mauer Der Toten or Firebase Z could lead to a welcome change of scenery and allow Treyarch to add a fully original location to the map.

Lastly, Wonder Weapon build quests would be a good addition. Right now, unless players have the schematics, getting Winder Wonder comes down to Mystery Box luck. By the time players get one and upgrade it with points, the storm could be spreading, giving them little time to use it. However, if players could reliably build MWZ's new Scorcher Wonder Weapon as well as the Ray Gun and Wunderwaffe through a quest, they could earn the Wonder Weapons every match. As long as the timer is intact, players will be limited on how much they can do and Treyarch will be restrained a bit when it comes to Easter eggs, but songs, Aether Bunnies, and Wonder Weapon quests should all be added soon.
