Activision has confirmed the reveal date for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3’s villain Makarov along with a trailer, which arrives on August 9, 2023. This comes barely 24 hours after the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 teaser dropped, which confirmed the next entry in the Modern Warfare trilogy.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 will be the third entry in the Modern Warfare reboot subseries. It will also be the first time in Call of Duty history that two major titles in the same subseries will launch in consecutive years as Modern Warfare 2 released last year alongside Warzone 2. Rumors surrounding this year’s title have been making the rounds on social media for a while now, which prompted Activision to announce the reveal date for Modern Warfare 3 last week to curb all speculation. Now, with the name finally confirmed, Activision plans to reveal the upcoming game’s main antagonist.

The official Call of Duty channel on YouTube has a video scheduled to go live on August 9, 2023, which is titled "Makarov Reveal Trailer." Vladimir Makarov is one of the franchise’s most iconic villains besides General Shepherd. At the moment, Makarov's plans remain a mystery but considering his history in the series his actions will likely have destructive consequences.

The story of Modern Warfare 3 will also be different from the 2011 game considering General Shepherd is still alive in this rebooted universe. In the original Modern Warfare 2, Shepherd was killed by Soap and the next game had Makarov as the main villain. However, since both Shepherd and Makarov are alive in this year's Modern Warfare 3, the game's story could take a very different direction. At the end of the 2022 Modern Warfare 2, it was revealed that Makarov-led ultra nationalist Russians had disrupted Shepherd’s plans, which could mean that the upcoming game could have the two antagonists working against each other

Along with Makarov, Warzone Season 5 also confirmed the return of Philip Graves. It was believed that Graves died at the hands of Soap in an explosion, but he is seemingly back from the dead as shown in a recent trailer. Graves’s return also has big implications for Modern Warfare 3 considering there are now 3 possible villains for the game. Additionally, Activision has also confirmed that the popular slide-cancel feature is also coming back.
