Highlights

  • Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 has adopted a live-service model, eliminating DLC and promising more content in the future.
  • The new Hordepoint mode in Modern Warfare 3 Season 2 combines Call of Duty Zombies with the classic multiplayer mode Hardpoint.
  • The creative PvPvE design of Hordepoint, on top of all the other new content being added in MW3 Season 2, is a good sign for the game's future features.

Over the last few entries, Call of Duty has decided to embrace more and more of the live-service model, at least when it comes to its multiplayer modes and Call of Duty: Warzone. Back in the day, a Call of Duty would release complete with a campaign, multiplayer mode, and usually some kind of unique third mode, and it would add a series of large paid DLC packs in the months following its launch. Nowadays, Call of Duty has essentially scrapped DLC altogether, instead introducing a live-service model that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is embracing fully.

While Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 had quite a bit of content at launch, it had no original 6v6 maps, and it had only a few game modes. With its new live-service model, Call of Duty is now able to shirk off those criticisms, and instead promise that players will receive more content in the future. While this can be a major issue with live-service games, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 has made good on a lot of its promises, and Modern Warfare 3 Season 2 is bringing with it a slew of new content, including a mode that could be the season's star.

Hordepoint Could End Up Being a Big Hit For Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3's Hordepoint Mode Explained

On February 7, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 received its first round of second-season content. One of the biggest additions in Modern Warfare 3 Season 2 is the limited-time Horde Hunt event, which sees a variety of zombie-themed modes and missions get added to Modern Warfare 3's multiplayer and Call of Duty: Warzone. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3's big zombies-themed addition is a new game mode, cleverly titled Hordepoint.

A mode that debuted all the way back in Sledgehammer's Call of Duty: WW2 in 2018 as part of its limited-time Attack of the Undead event, Hordepoint offers a chaotic blend of Call of Duty Zombies and the classic multiplayer game mode Hardpoint. In Hordepoint, players attempt to capture a specific area on the map, fending off an enemy team while they're at it, just like in Hardpoint. The twist here is that, once an area has been captured, a portal appears and zombies start to swarm the objective.

Killing zombies in Hordepoint will reward the player with a few different items, all of which will be very familiar to Call of Duty Zombies fans. Zombies have a chance to drop power-ups including a Nuke, Insta-Kill, and Max Ammo. Zombies also have a chance of dropping a powered-up Pack-a-Punch weapon upon death, giving players a sizable advantage against the enemy team, but not for too long, as each Pack-a-Punch weapon only has a few rounds of ammo. It's intense, chaotic, and a bit absurd. While this frenzy won't be everyone's cup of tea, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3's new Hordepoint mode offers a genuinely unique CoD multiplayer experience, and it could end up being the hidden hero of this latest season.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Season 2 Delivers a Lot of What Fans Want

After an incredibly rough launch in terms of critical reception, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Season 2 seems to be offering fans pretty much exactly what they want. With three new 6v6 maps from the get-go, a new War Mode map, the return of modes like Snipers Only and Team Gun Game, and another handful of map variants and remakes coming later in the season, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Season 2 is offering an impressive line-up of free content. Hopefully, that's a good omen for the game's future.
