UPDATE 8/14: An Activision spokesperson has debunked the rumors about the game's price being cheaper than expected.

"As stated in numerous Activision Blizzard quarterly conference calls, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III is a premium release. It will be priced accordingly at $70."

Original story follows.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 may be released at half price according to a new rumor, but fans shouldn't get their hopes up. Prior to its reveal, reputable sources claimed that the 2023 Call of Duty game was going to be an expansion for Modern Warfare 2 instead of a full-fledged release. Activision pushed back against those reports, and it was finally confirmed that the 2023 Call of Duty game would indeed be a full release and a direct sequel to 2022's Modern Warfare 2.

Activision has started pulling the curtain back on the 2023 version of Modern Warfare 3. It recently released a teaser trailer revealing returning villain Makarov, and it has confirmed that a full reveal for the game will come on August 17. It also confirmed that multiplayer content from Modern Warfare 2 will carry over to Modern Warfare 3, a first for the franchise. However, this move has called into question the scale of new content coming to Modern Warfare 3.

Even though Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is being presented as a full game and not an expansion as was previously reported, it's possible it will still launch at a lower price point. Twitter user Evan Fox discovered that Modern Warfare 3 was being listed at AUD $54.95 on Steam, which roughly translates to USD $36, or about half the price of a brand-new Call of Duty game. Now, it's entirely possible that this price is an error or a placeholder. Needless to say, fans shouldn't get their hopes up. The most likely scenario is that Activision will still sell Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 at full price. But if the price is not an error or placeholder, it does seem to support the idea that Modern Warfare 3 started life as an expansion and will have generally less content than what fans are used to with a new main series CoD release.

Another theory is that this lower price point will only be for gamers that already own Modern Warfare 2. If so, this would again support theories that the 2023 Call of Duty game was originally meant to be an expansion for Modern Warfare 2 and will therefore not have as much content as fans would normally expect, justifying the potentially lower price point. Of course, if this price is an error or placeholder, it really doesn't tell Call of Duty fans anything about the new game and so it would be best to just wait for official information from Activision.

More info on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is coming on August 17, so fans of the franchise should wait until then before getting too excited about the possibility that this year's game will be cheaper than usual. In the meantime, it will be interesting to see how extensive the August 17 reveal is. There are many rumors about this year's Call of Duty that need cleared up, like the potential return of Zombies mode, and so hopefully fans get their answers soon.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 launches November 10 for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
