A lot is now known about Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 thanks to its release being so near, and fans have turned their attention to what kind of post-launch content the title may receive. There are already a lot of rumors circulating about what this content will look like, with it being reported that many in-game seasons for the title could be themed around iconic past entries to the franchise.

If this is true, then there is a huge range of potential titles that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 could take inspiration from for its in-game seasons. However, the most important game that MW3 could center a season around is Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, which holds an intense amount of historic value in shaping the franchise into the dominant force that it is today.

The Call of Duty franchise's multiplayer has evolved to become defined by its in-game seasons, as is the case with most AAA online experiences. These seasons offer a huge amount of fresh content for players to unlock and enjoy, having the great bonus of introducing crossovers with other IPs or even celebrities.

Call of Duty has been accused of straying too far from its roots with these crossovers in recent years, with in-game operators like Nicki Minaj being greeted with as much confusion as they are excitement. This has supposedly been reeled in to an extent in Modern Warfare 3, with rumors suggesting that many of its in-game seasons will be solely themed around past CoD entries.

These crossovers will branch between different CoD sub-franchises, with games like Advanced Warfare and Ghosts supposedly getting their own seasons. With this in mind, it only seems right that 2007's Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare be given its own dedicated season in the upcoming title. Call of Duty 4 has indeed received a lot of love in recent years, with a comprehensive remastered version of the title even releasing in 2016. With that being said, the sheer importance of the release in shaping Modern Warfare and CoD as a whole makes it more than worthy of even more attention moving forward.

It was CoD 4 that gave fans the first glimpses at now iconic characters like Soap, Griggs, and Gaz, as well as revolutionizing CoD multiplayer with things like killstreaks and create-a-class. A CoD 4 season in Modern Warfare 3 could reintroduce characters like Griggs and the original version of Gaz as playable operators, as well as villains like Zakhaev and Al-Asad.

Of course, this themed season could also include weapon blueprints inspired by Call of Duty 4, even if they simply give pre-existing weapons a new look to match their 2007 counterparts. One cult-classic weapon in particular was the Golden Desert Eagle in the original Modern Warfare, and this could be reintroduced as a fitting nod to the title in Modern Warfare 3.

Considering that both Modern Warfare 3 and CoD 4 belong to the MW franchise, the potential for shared content between the two is near-endless. While seasonal crossovers with games like Advanced Warfare may feel a bit out of place in MW3, the content that a CoD 4 season could harbor would be right at home in the upcoming release.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 launches on November 10 for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
