Following months of leaks and rumors, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 was finally announced last week, and it seems the vast majority of those leaks and rumors turned out to be true. Sledgehammer Games is indeed the developer leading the charge with this year's entry, and the game will be a direct sequel to last year's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, with a campaign that brings back some very familiar faces. But while Modern Warfare 3's campaign sounds like one of its biggest highlights, a Call of Duty game is only as good as its multiplayer mode, and thankfully it seems as though Modern Warfare 3 should be fine in that department.

Last year's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 made some pretty significant, and extremely controversial changes to the usual Call of Duty multiplayer formula, including the removal of red dots on the minimap, and slide canceling. It seems as though Activision has really listened to all of that negative feedback, as Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is set to revert just about every one of MW2's changes. Along with those changes, Modern Warfare 3 confirmed that a total of 16 6v6 maps will be coming on launch, and each one will take players on an intense firefight down memory lane.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 will launch with a total of 16 6v6 maps, all of which are remastered versions of 2009 Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2's maps. Naturally, this line-up includes some of the most beloved Call of Duty maps of all time. Highrise, Terminal, Quarry, Favela, Estate, and the infamous dueling spot Rust are all coming to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 on launch, along with some of the lesser-known maps like Karachi, Rundown, and Derail.

This isn't the first time many of these maps have been remastered, however. Maps like Terminal and Rust have made several appearances across various Call of Duty entries, sometimes with just slight tweaks to the original design, and occasionally with full ground-up remakes of the entire environment. Most recently, many of these classic Modern Warfare 2 maps were used in Call of Duty: Warzone 2 as points of interest for its Al Mazrah map, with Highrise appearing between two skyscrapers, Rust appearing in the desert, and Quarry taking up a big spot at the top of the map.

For Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, each of these classic maps has been completely remade. This means that each map is getting not only a new coat of high-res paint, but also a handful of new features, such as the addition of functional doors on some maps. Hopefully these changes will strike the perfect balance of offering a fresh and modern experience without taking too much of the original map's essence and identity away.

Sledgehammer Games has also confirmed that four large-scale maps will be coming to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 on launch. Though no details have been given for any of these, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 will feature three Ground War/Invasion maps on launch, along with a map designed specifically for the MW3 War game mode, which is set to make its triumphant return after six long years. Sledgehammer has also promised that a total of 12 brand new 6v6 maps will also be coming to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 post-launch, though an exact date hasn't been given yet.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 launches November 10 for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
