War is an eternal conflict in Call of Duty, and Infinity Ward seeks to make it more tactical than ever with Modern Warfare 2 (2022). Infinity Ward’s reboot of the 2009 classic title features brand-new mechanics, perks, and weapons to enter the many different maps and game modes. It may seem overwhelming at first, but within no time, players will be rising through the ranks of the controversial Skill Based Match Making.

As of release, there are a total of 8 base perks in Modern Warfare 2. Each of them is unique, but only some are the very best and should be equipped with every loadout to come. Others should be left on the lobby screen.

8 Strong Arm

modern warfare 2 strong arm perk

When using Strong Arm, players will be able to see the trajectory of the throwable equipment, and can also throw it further. It can be useful to players that rely on tactical equipment, or even those that just want to throw a grenade across the map at a faster and further distance.

Players won’t have to wait long for this perk, as it is automatically unlocked at level 1. It’s not worth using, because it relies on throwables, and seeing the trajectory rarely helps when players could be out there shooting rather than finding out where their only grenade will land.

7 Extra Tactical

modern warfare 2 extra tactical perk

For those players that enjoy a piece of tactical equipment, the Extra Tactical perk allows them to spawn in with two. This could mean double trouble for those that fear stun grenades, as out there will be a player running around and momentarily blinding players twice. That is, if they have reached level 18.

Extra Tactical is not the greatest perk in the game, and should be shelved for the far superior base perks in Modern Warfare 2. It offers no real advantage other than giving players a second chance to use a tactical, which they would just respawn with anyway after an inevitable death.

6 Scavenger

modern warfare 2 scavenger perk

Players can never have too much ammo, especially in a fight against an entire competent team. Sometimes bullets run dry, and players will have no choice but to abandon their trusty loadout weapon for a gun they find off of a corpse that hopefully has a full magazine or two. With Scavenger, unlocked at level 26, players will always have ammo.

Scavenger allows players to resupply ammo and throw knives from dead players, which ensures that they will never hear the empty click of their gun and or suffer death from a lack of ammunition. However, death is inevitable in the fast-paced action of Call of Duty, so running out of ammo won’t always be the way of things.

5 Bomb Squad

modern warfare 2 bomb squad perk

Grenades and rocket launchers sure pack a punch due to their explosive properties. Some Call of Duty players merrily throw a grenade into the air in the hopes that it rolls and kills someone due to the large area of effect. Yet those with Bomb Squad equipped as a perk have nothing to fear.

Unlocked at 11, players with Bomb Squad will take reduced damage from explosives, as long as they are not from a kill streak. They'll feel as confident as Laswell with Bomb Squad. Fuse timers from thrown grenades will also be reset once thrown back, basically meaning that exploding is impossible. However, this perk is still not the best considering the rarity of grenade kills.

4 Battle Hardened

modern warfare 2 battle hardened perk

Tactical grenades can be pretty letha;. This comes from the fact that weaponry such as flash grenades will blind the player, and make them a target like fish in a barrel since they will not be able to move well or see well. Thankfully for the player, Battled Hardened has just what they need at level 37.

The effects of flash grenades, stun grenades, EMP grenades, gas grenades, and shock sticks are all greatly reduced, making the player a tank for taking tactical damage. They will also be immune to snapshot grenades, rendering the tactical slot pointless against whoever wields Battle Hardened.

3 Double Time

modern warfare 2 double time perk

Speed is important in Call of Duty. Although some players prefer the method of sitting still and camping, others prefer to be far more active on the battlefield and take matters into their own hands. Double Time increases the duration of Tactical Sprint by double and gives a 30% speed increase to crouch movement.

Players won’t have to grind for Double Time, as it is automatically unlocked at level 1. This is a pretty useful perk, as speed is a necessity when navigating the wild battlefield. By having double the sprint time, players won’t ever feel like they are moving too slowly.

2 Tracker

modern warfare 2 tracker perk

Stealth and enemy awareness are large factors in the new age of Call of Duty. Players could be anywhere: hiding behind a closed door, or running around the entire map in a thirst for a killstreak. With Tracker, enemies will leave behind a footprint trail in bright red. Enemy death markers are also visible, whilst kill markers are obscured and hidden from the enemy team.

By reaching level 39, players will unlock Tracker. It’s a great perk that ensures that no one can get the upper hand on the player using this perk, as Tracker players will know who is running off, and where they are running to, all whilst ensuring their kills are silent and extremely deadly.

1 Overkill

modern warfare 2 overkill perk

Overkill is a classic perk that has been with the Call of Duty franchise for many games. It allows the player to equip two primary weapons in their loadout. Overkill is pretty important, as it allows more freedom of choice when it comes to weaponry. Players can run around with two shotguns or even a more tactical loadout like an assault rifle and a shotgun.

The way that players play Call of Duty changes every year, and being tactical is as important as ever in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. By unlocking Overkill at level 21, players will have more control over what weapons they bring to the map, and may potentially change the tide of the game.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is available for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
