Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is now over two years old, having been released in 2019, and fans have seen two new Call of Duty games released since. However, of the last three Call of Duty releases, it may be Call of Duty: Modern Warfare that has been the most successful and most well-received. Call of Duty: Vanguard has struggled in sales when compared to previous entries in the series, while Black Ops Cold War faced some barriers at launch, including a lack of multiplayer maps. With this in mind, it is no surprise that the Call of Duty series will likely be revisiting Modern Warfare in its next installment.

Rather confusingly, Call of Duty 2022 will be titled Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 according to leaks. This will be differentiated from the original Modern Warfare 2 by using roman numerals for the official title, although some fans may still struggle with the familiar name. Especially given the recent release of a remastered version of Modern Warfare 2’s campaign, having another Call of Duty release with the same name may confuse online discussions. Regardless, fans will be happy to see the continuation of the Modern Warfare reboot that went down so well in 2019. In particular, Modern Warfare’s new engine was popular, and fans will be hoping to see it used more in the future.

Following a long wait for the sequel to Modern Warfare 2019, fans will be eager to get their hands on the game, and leakers have been more than happy to stir the pot. It looks as though fans should expect a slightly different experience from Modern Warfare 2 according to leaks, although further innovation may well be applauded. While none of these leaks have been officially confirmed as of yet, they paint an interesting picture of Call of Duty's future.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’s Returning Characters

The ending of Modern Warfare 2019 hints that the sequel will center around the beginnings of Task Force 141, and as a result, many of the rumors surrounding Call of Duty 2022 have been concerning this. For starters, according to rumors, Modern Warfare 2 will indeed surround the inception of Task Force 141, serving as a boost of nostalgia for fans of the original Modern Warfare series. Modern Warfare 2019 was in a different timeline to the original series, although it seems that they are linked and do follow a similar path. How much Modern Warfare 2 will resemble Call of Duty 4 is unclear, but there will be a handful of similarities according to rumors.

As the next CoD game seems like it will be returning to a classic setting, it may come as no surprise that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 will feature a handful of the Call of Duty series' best characters. Recent rumors have outlined the classic characters set to feature in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. Included within these characters are of course Captain Price, along with Soap, Ghost, Gaz, and even the original Modern Warfare 2’s protagonist, Roach, and antagonist General Shepherd. Given how fans know the stories of these characters, including Shepherd’s betrayal of Task Force 141 in Modern Warfare 2, it will be interesting to see how the stories of these characters are handled assuming the rumors are true.

Skill-Based Matchmaking in Call of Duty 2022

In news that will come as a shock to very few Call of Duty fans, one of the more controversial aspects of recent Call of Duty games is set to continue to feature going forward. Skill-based matchmaking in Call of Duty has become a divisive topic, with some seeing the benefits for newer players and many others feeling as though it strips the feeling of progression from multiplayer. However, it seems as though Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 will also feature skill-based matchmaking, leaving those frustrated in the dark. It was always unlikely that the Call of Duty series would abandon SBMM in its next installment, making this rumor one of the more likely to be true.

According to another rumor, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is supposedly looking to its competition in Battlefield 2042 for ideas. According to this rumor, something like Battlefield 2042’sHazard Zone game mode will be in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. This game mode includes both PvE and PvP, where squads of four will battle to secure intel from downed satellites. According to these rumors, Modern Warfare 2 will utilize Warzone to host this game mode, and the map will be slightly changed to accommodate it. Like Warzone, this will be connected but separate from the game’s main multiplayer, acting more like an extension of the game than just another multiplayer game mode.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2019 was one of the darker entries in the series, particularly in the game’s campaign mode. This move wasn’t without its own controversy, though on the whole fans approved of the darker, more gritty Call of Duty game. This trend looks set to continue as a leak from RalphsValve on Twitter has suggested that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 will have gore and death animations. Examples of this gore include enemy players begging for their lives, or convulsing after being shot. Players will likely have the option to turn graphic content off upon launch, but according to rumors, the base experience will be fairly gruesome.

RalphsValve has also claimed that Modern Warfare 2 will have a PT-inspire game mode to replace Spec Ops. P.T. was the playable teaser for the canceled Silent Hills, and it involved the player walking through a haunted house, before inevitably being confronted by a ghostly being. RalphsValve then elaborated on the claim by tweeting a picture of Modern Warfare’s “Clean House” mission, which suggests that the game mode may follow a similar format. This is one of the more strange rumors surrounding Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, but it is nonetheless intriguing.
