Call of Duty Zombies has a passionate fan base that is attached to numerous characters from the mode’s story, with one of the most popular of all being Edward Richtofen. As such, it is not all that surprising that Call of Duty Zombies fans are bothered by his latest appearance in Call of Duty Mobile, as any big changes to a beloved character's appearance will always be a recipe for controversy.

Edward Richtofen, like fellow Zombies icons Tank Dempsey, Nikolai Belinski, and Takeo Masaki, debuted in the Call of Duty: World at War map Shi No Numa. One of the rare cases where players got to play as the villain, the other characters followed Richtofen’s orders until he was eventually able to gain control of the undead. Once he did, earth was plunged into an apocalypse, with the psychotic doctor torturing survivors in various games. However, Ultimis Richtofen is not the only version of the character, and fans are not very happy with the latest take on him.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Details Loadouts for Multiplayer and Zombies

The Call of Duty developers reveal several new details about loadouts for multiplayer and Zombies modes in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.

Call of Duty Mobile’s tenth Season and fourth anniversary are being celebrated in a number of ways, though one of them is a special draw for Legendary Richtofen - Dark Designs. This take on the most important CoD Zombies character is divisive, and given how much of a departure it is from his usual appearances, it is not hard to see why. A meme shared by Reddit user totally1of1, as well as the many comments found below it, celebrates the Primis and Ultimis versions of Richtofen that fans know and love while bashing the new design.

Most players seem shocked that the new skin is meant to be Edward Richtofen, as it looks nothing like the character they know and love. His hair is given a different style from normal in addition to a bright silver color, with his face covered in a Hannibal Lector-like mask. He dons a gray jacket and some armor that is covered in bright blue tubes, with the design appearing to be an attempt at a futuristic scientist aesthetic. While this could have been a decent enough design for an original Black Ops 3-inspired character, it is quite the leap for a fan favorite like Richtofen.

Call of Duty Mobile has also offered regular and zombified versions of Primis Richtofen. Before adding something like this futuristic design, it could have added Ultimis Richtofen, zombified Ultimis Richtofen, and Eddie from Black Ops Cold War - all of which likely would have gone over better with fans.

CoD Zombies fans can take solace in the fact that Call of Duty Mobile and its many skins are not canon, so the outfit can just be looked at as a fun - if strange - alternate universe concept. Next time players see Richtofen, it will likely be as Requiem’s Director in Call of Duty 2024, with Eddie clearly having a big plan in the works the last time fans saw him.
