As one of the most popular games in the world, Call of Duty is a cultural phenomenon on its own, so collaborations with other brands are a given. The same is true of Gundam, a genre-defining franchise that fields multiple contenders for the best mecha anime around. Gundam's owners at Bandai Namco are also keen to spread awareness by banking on the fact that Call of Duty's massive audience surely holds its own Gundam fans, as well as putting people that might not otherwise give Gundam a chance in contact with its unique concepts and visuals.

Call of Duty Gundam Crossover Announced

Bandai Namco announces an unexpected crossover between Call of Duty and the legendary mecha anime series Mobile Suit Gundam.

Now a leak from Call of Duty news account CharlieIntel showed off which of the Gundam series the Call of DutyGundam crossover will draw from. The leak shows off promo images of the three new Gundam-themed operator skins coming alongside other changes set for Call of Duty Season 4. According to the leak, the three Call of Duty Gundam crossover skins will use an adapted appearance rather than simply rendering the exact models as they appear in various Gundam anime series.

Call of Duty Gundam Skins are Based on Mobile Suit Gundam and The Witch From Mercury

Though not yet officially confirmed at the time of publication, the leaked promo images align with the appearance of a Gundam skin posted to the official Call of Duty social media accounts. Unlike the way Space Marine outfits were almost unchanged for the Call of Duty and Warhammer 40K crossover event, the Gundam skins blend the "tactical" style of Call of Duty with the brightly-colored silhouettes of the mecha. The costumes use weapon harnesses, pouches, and gun belts mixed with armor and helmets from the show's mecha. In a way, they look like human-sized soldiers wearing elaborate Gundam cosplay outfits over their normal combat gear.

Two of the three skins are based on iconic mobile suits from the original 1979 Mobile Suit Gundam anime series: The RX-78-2 Gundam piloted by Amuro Ray, and the customized, red MS-06S Zaku II piloted by Amuro's nemesis Char Aznable. The third skin is based on the XVX-016 Gundam Aerial, the main Gundam from The Witch From Mercury.

The Gundam skins also include weapon visuals based on iconic weapons. The RX-78-2 Gundam pack includes a shield made to look like the Gundam's telltale red shield with a star insignia, and a bright-pink Beam Saber. The Zaku II pack adds bright red colors to two firearms, as well as the Zaku's "Heat Hawk" axe. The Aerial pack includes a second custom shield, as well as sniper rifle and assault rifle customizations that reflect some of the unique visual signifiers from The Witch from Mercury.
