If a recent rumor is to be believed, Call of Duty 2025 will be to Call of Duty 2024 as Modern Warfare 3 is to Modern Warfare 2, complete with remastered multiplayer maps pulled from Black Ops 2. The 2023 Call of Duty game is doing things quite a bit different. For the first time in series history, the new Call of Duty game will be a direct sequel to the one that came before it, following up on the story of the Modern Warfare 2 campaign.
Another way Modern Warfare 3 will differ from other Call of Duty games is that it won't have a brand-new multiplayer experience. On the contrary, Modern Warfare 3 is carrying over the general style, weapons, and unlocks from Modern Warfare 2 and giving players remastered maps from the 2009 Modern Warfare 2 game to battle it out on. This risky strategy seems to be a result of the Call of Duty development struggles from a few years ago that threw the release pattern off track and forced Treyarch to rush out Black Ops Cold War in lieu of the Sledgehammer-developed CoD that was supposed to hit the market in 2020, though that's just speculation at this time.
Regardless, it seems like Modern Warfare 3 could be the start of a new trend. According to leaker el_bobberto on Twitter, the 2025 Call of Duty game will fill the same role for Treyarch's new Call of Duty game that's dropping in 2024. But instead of using maps from the 2009 Modern Warfare 2, it will apparently use maps from Black Ops 2 instead. Obviously, fans should take this information with a massive grain of salt, and the leaker themselves even admitted that this is "very likely to change within the next 2 years."

If Modern Warfare 3 is a success, it would make sense for Activision to try the strategy again for future games. And with the Call of Duty series a staggering 20 games deep with the release of Modern Warfare 3 later this year, there will be no shortage of classic CoD titles to choose from.
Assuming the rumor is true, some fans may be wondering why the original Black Ops is seemingly be passed over for Black Ops 2. There were many fan favorite multiplayer maps in the first Black Ops game, so it does seem odd to go directly to Black Ops 2. Then again, Black Ops 2 had a map called Nuketown 2025, so that could be one reason why. Unfortunately, it will be at least two years before fans have their answers about the 2025 Call of Duty game, as Activision doesn't reveal them until the spring or summer of the year of their release.
