Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 Zombies is widely considered as the best version of the classic co-op mode, and for good reason. Its map lineup was second-to-none, something that is shown clearly with how Zetsubou No Shima was viewed. Despite being an excellent map with some unique gameplay mechanics, it was simply outclassed by the game’s other offerings, as proper classics like Shadows of Evil and Der Eisendrache were released.

One area where Zetsubou No Shima really shined was in its side Easter eggs. Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 players could tame the Thrasher mini boss, create clone pods, defeat a massive spider, and become a spider themselves. However, one odd secret is an easily missable cameo from a distant sea monster, which can be seen roaming outside the playable area at a certain point in the match. While fans received no answers about this creature in Black Ops 3, Treyarch’s next Zombies mode has a chance to restart the discussion about it.

Zetsubou No Shima’s Sea Monster Easter Egg Explained

The Zetsubou No Shima Easter egg involving this monster is surprisingly simple, as the creature spawns in if Zombies players reach a high round. Specifically, gamers will need to hit round 50, and from there they need to head over to Lab B. They can either stand on the staircase or behind the 115 water, and if they gaze out into the distance, they will be able to make out a massive shadowy figure roaming around beyond some trees.

Clearly, this monstrosity would be a huge threat, though it never attacks the player and is never seen up close. The Call of Duty Zombies community has only ever seen the beast’s silhouette, with the video from Green Grass Snake providing one of the best looks at it. The creature in question is seemingly covered in tendrils and could be a massive gateworm, though since it seemingly walks around, this is unlikely. Though Treyarch may have just put this distant monster into the game to mess with players, there is a chance that this shadowy figure could be addressed soon.

Call of Duty 2024’s First Zombies Map Could Allow Players To Fight Zetsubou’s Distant Monster

Treyarch has shown that figures and creations from the Aether universe can appear in the Dark Aether story, such as the Manglers and Hellhounds. As such, Treyarch could easily bring back this sea monster if it saw fit, and the ending of Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War’s Forsaken Easter egg suggests that the developer will soon have a perfect opportunity to do so.

During Forsaken’s final cutscene, Peck points to the middle of the ocean where the missiles were dropped after Outbreak’s main quest. Gamers have theorized that Call of Duty 2024’s first Zombies map will have them exploring an underwater Requiem base within the Mariana Trench, and said map could feature a number of zombified sea creatures to fight since the missiles landed in the ocean. It would also be the perfect place to reintroduce Zetsubou No Shima’s distant monster.

While the round 50 Easter egg in Zetsubou No Shima could just be seen as something that is not meant to be answered, or Treyarch could retcon the moment to say that it was an Orda moving in the distance, it would be nice to see this secret actually lead to something. This building-sized, tendril covered monster could make for a thrilling final boss in an underwater Zombies map, with Treyarch finally letting fans see what it really looks like. Treyarch making good on a random teaser from years prior is something that Call of Duty Zombies fans have come to expect, after all, so connecting this shadowy monster to the ongoing story seems like a genuine possibility.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 is available now on PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One.
