Call of Duty Zombies fans have been desperate for a return to form in recent years. Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 may be underrated when looking back on it today, but its buggy launch and a rushed finale to the Aether story meant it was hard to see the good it did. Black Ops Cold War was a good step on the right direction that introduced some solid new mechanics, even if the round-based maps had boring settings and Operators hurt the storytelling. The objective focus of Vanguard Zombies left the mode at its lowest point, and while Modern Warfare 3 Zombies’ open-world offering has won over casual fans, the round-based audience needs Call of Duty 2024 to deliver.

As it turns out, Call of Duty 2024’s Zombies mode is shaping up to be exactly what these players are looking for, assuming that some recent datamining proves accurate. While leaked info should always be taken with a grain of salt and is subject to change, the details posted online and covered by YouTuber MrRoflWaffles paint a very promising picture of the upcoming mode. Based on what has been found thus far, the mode sounds a lot like Black Ops 3, which is viewed by most as the peak of CoD Zombies.

Call of Duty Zombies May Have Two Maps on Day One, Like Black Ops 3

Alongside further confirmation that round-based Zombies is returning, as well as expected features like the Mystery Box, two survival maps are seemingly being worked on for launch day. While one could theoretically be saved as a Season 1 release, the fact that it is so far along already suggests that players will indeed be getting two maps on disc. This is a great sign, as Black Ops 3 thrived by offering the smaller Der Riese remake The Giant and the complex Shadows of Evil at launch. Black Ops 4 having four maps on day one sounded like a positive, but the lack of polish for them and the community being unable to digest each one properly proved more detrimental than beneficial.

Aside from two maps meaning more content on launch day, but not too much, each location sounds nothing like the other. One map will be a carrier ship, and though this was technically done before in Exo Zombies, Treyarch has not yet focused on a carrier with its round-based maps. This rumored setting would fit a Gulf War Call of Duty game well, and it could be a medium-sized arena. Hopefully, Treyarch has learned from the divisive Voyage of Despair, as though the Titanic was very different from a war vessel, there would surely be some design similarities. The other map could offer players a far bigger play space, as players will supposedly be entering a huge overrun city that includes features like elevators to help them get around.

Call of Duty Zombies has had success with city maps in the past, as the highly praised Shadows of Evil was set in a fictional 1940s location called Morg City. Mauer Der Toten was also city-focused, and both maps set a high bar for Treyarch to get over. Still, a modern city could stand out, as it would have a significantly different aesthetic.

Call of Duty Zombies May Finally Revive Black Ops 3’s Gobblegum System

Alongside a city and carrier map, Call of Duty 2024 Zombies will supposedly bring back Gobblegum. Though it is unclear if it will get a visual redesign like the elixirs in Black Ops 4 or the perk cans from Black Ops Cold War and MWZ, the feature was one that many fans adored. While there would surely be some controversy if it came back since Call of Duty already has other forms of customization via its cosmetic bundles and battle passes, Gobblegums do add more depth to gameplay and were able to be acquired easily just by playing. Whether players are messing around with Whimsical Gobblegums, getting the most out of Classic gums like Alchemical Antithesis to reach high rounds, or using Shopping Free to speed up their games, bringing them back would mean players have more control over their matches and another tool to make games more fun.
