  • The leaked cover art features franchise icon Captain Price and an updated Modern Warfare 3 logo, with the Roman numeral "3" in red.
  • The delayed reveal of Modern Warfare 3 could be due to its reported origin as a smaller expansion for Modern Warfare 2, which grew into a full-fledged release.

Call of Duty has officially acknowledged the leaked logo and key art for the as-of-yet unconfirmed Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, and has let fans know when they'll be able to learn more. 2023 was reportedly going to be the first gap year for the annualized Call of Duty franchise since 2004, with a smaller expansion for last year's Modern Warfare 2 set to bridge the gap until Treyarch's 2024 title. However, this alleged expansion grew in size and ambition, becoming a full-fledged Call of Duty release.

The follow up to 2022's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 was already heavily speculated to be Modern Warfare 3 as the natural progression of this Modern Warfare reboot trilogy, which began in 2019. All but confirming the rumor was the recent leak of Modern Warfare 3's logo and cover art on a Monster Energy drink package. Appearing on the cover of the new game is franchise icon Captain Price with an updated Modern Warfare 3 logo over his chest. The "Modern Warfare" text harkens back to the font used in 2019's Modern Warfare logo, and the Roman numeral "3" is in red, the color's first use in the ever popular Call of Duty subseries.

Now several days later, Call of Duty has officially acknowledged the leaked Modern Warfare 3 cover with a humorous image posted on Twitter. The post recreates the red Captain Price cover art with a shoddily drawn stick figure, complete with Price's iconic boonie hat and a small L-shaped pistol attached to one of his stick arms. The text at the top of the image, written in Comic Sans font, reads "Modern Warfare Redacted?"

Most importantly, in this tweet Call of Duty adds that it'll "share even more next week," which likely means a full reveal of Modern Warfare 3 is imminent. Call of Duty titles have typically been revealed earlier in the year, around the late Spring or early Summer window. 2020's Black Ops Cold War broke that tradition, pushing its reveal almost to the beginning of the Fall. Vanguard followed suit a year later, but the reveal of last year's Modern Warfare 2 returned to the Spring window. Modern Warfare 3 holding off on its reveal until August could be due to its nature of allegedly beginning as a Modern Warfare 2 expansion, but that's just speculation at this time.

Call of Duty had previously confirmed that the reveal of 2023's game would take place in Warzone during the current Season 5. This won't be the first time the battle royale is being used to reveal the next Call of Duty title, as Vanguard's Polina Petrova was sniping players during the winner's cutscene in the Black Ops Cold War iteration of Warzone as a teaser ahead of Vanguard's full reveal back in 2021. Fans who are eager to learn more about Modern Warfare 3 should keep an eye on Warzone next week.
