The Call of Duty franchise has been one of the most successful series in the games industry for the past decade and a half. Fans all over the world gather around their consoles every fall to frag it out with friends in the fast-paced and addictive multiplayer, and first-person shooter fans often enjoy the dramatic and explosive single-player campaigns. And now Call of Duty: Modern Warfare has set a new standard in the franchise, as it has become the best-selling COD game ever.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare was launched on October 25, 2019, to great triumph, and even as the title was released last year, MW has been the highest-selling game of 2020 across all video games.

The reboot of the Modern Warfare franchise is being seen as a grand-success, as initially, the decision sounded intriguing, but perhaps also a bit of a gamble. Infinity Ward thought it would be wise to start fresh with the franchise, and that the new take would build extra hype for fans. The numbers speak for themselves.

Activision has been incredibly busy with the Call of Duty franchise as of late, breaking its yearly cadence of one new COD game each fall and releasing Call of Duty: Warzone, the popular and successful battle royale, and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered in the past couple months.

Warzone is a free to play stand-alone title, but also playable inside of Modern Warfare. And the MW2 Campain Remastered game can be purchased within Modern Warfare, which gives the players an extra operator skin and tons of goodies to use in Modern Warfare itself. It looks like Activision's plan of melding these games together as much as possible has proven to be lucrative.

Even with all the sales success, however, fans have been frustrated with the state of Modern Warfare. The glitches and server issues are seemingly endless, as a new problem seems to unveil itself every few days. There are some fans who have claimed that they will stop playing the popular shooter until Activision and Infinity Ward fix problems such as losing battle pass progress, not being able to get into games, and cheaters running ramped.

Still, even with the issues, Modern Warfare's success is undeniable. Activision recently claimed that Call of Duty 2020 is still on track for later this year, so whatever that new title– which is being developed by Treyarch– is, it will have a high bar to jump over if it wants to catch Modern Warfare.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is currently available on Xbox One, PS4, and PC.
