Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has predictably attracted many players for its core multiplayer mode, but the game has a great task ahead in terms of maintaining this player base. With this latest title in the shooter franchise being set for an unprecedented two-year life cycle, the amount of post-launch content that needs to be implemented over the coming year will have to be both comprehensive and well-received.
To the excitement of many fans, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 received significant post-launch content with the launch of Season 2 on February 15. While this update has bolstered the content on offer for those looking to keep up with the game's online experience, there is still a core glaring issue with MW2's multiplayer that Season 2 has failed to address: a lack of new 6v6 maps.
What was Added in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2's Season 2
While Season 2 of Modern Warfare 2 brings a lot in the way of new cosmetics and operators, there are certain aspects of the Season that stand out as its overarching content. For example, one of the highest-profile elements of MW2 Season 2 is the addition of a Ranked Mode.
Call of Duty titles have long enjoyed ranked modes within their respective multiplayer arenas, so it has been an anticipated addition for the new Modern Warfare 2. This Ranked Mode gives more weight to online play, and is already being lauded for staving off some of the tedium that was beginning to creep up on many fans.
An official Hardcore playlist has also returned with Season 2 of Modern Warfare 2, as well as iconic game modes such as Infected and Gun Game. Despite this welcome new content, there is a persistent sentiment that Infinity Ward has yet to address some serious issues with Modern Warfare 2 in the latest season.
Modern Warfare 2's Season 2 Lacks New 6v6 Maps
One of the main criticisms of Modern Warfare 2's multiplayer regards the perceived lack of map diversity in its standard 6v6 modes. New 6v6 maps have come to Modern Warfare 2 in Season 2 through Valderas Museum and Dome. Valderas Museum is a map that is unique to Modern Warfare 2, originally featured in the game's beta before being pulled from the launch pool of 6v6 battlefields. As many veteran fans of the franchise will know, Dome is a returning fan-favorite map that was originally featured in 2011 Modern Warfare 3.
These two additions typify the problem with Modern Warfare 2's 6v6 map diversity, as the only additions in Season 2 are a remake and a map that was originally dropped after the game's beta period. With how synonymous the 6v6 experience is with Call of Duty's multiplayer, it is important that the breadth of 6v6 maps be expanded more comprehensively in future updates. There is still plenty of time for Modern Warfare 2 to make these change thanks to its two-year plan, but it remains that the lack of real unique 6v6 expansions in Season 2 is a missed opportunity.
