On May 24, Bungie, the makers of the Destiny games, announced a new game called Marathon. The first completely new project created by Bungie in over a decade, Marathon is an intense PvP shooter set in a sci-fi world. With a style and look previously unseen in past Bungie games, Marathon looks like a promising new game for fans of shooters.

The game's release has yet to be set, and there still isn't much known about the game aside from what was shown in the trailer. But there are a few things to take away from what is known and keep in mind as one waits for further updates and details about the game.

3 It's Not A Direct Sequel To The Original Marathon Trilogy

For fans of the original Marathon games, the reappearance of the title has sparked intrigue on whether it will have anything to do with the original trilogy. In an interview on the official Playstation blog, the game director for Marathon, Christopher Barrett, reveals that while the game won't be a direct sequel to the Marathon trilogy, it does have the feel of existing in the same universe as the previous games.

Set in a sci-fi futuristic world, players will become Runners, who are cybernetic mercenaries, hunting for fame, riches, and glory.

2 A Cyberpunk Inspired Aesthetic

In Bungie's ViDoc, Christopher Barrett goes on to explain that the new game takes from the "rich history of Marathon" and combines it with the elements of a PvP extraction shooter. With this formula, players get to be a part of the narrative. There's no predetermined hero character or protagonists; the player themselves will get to shape the world around them. As a Runner, players will explore a lost colony on the hostile planet of Tau Ceti 4.

Despite the dangers, the rewards of taking a chance are bountiful, as the planet is filled with powerful gear, weapons, and other kinds of loot that will strengthen a Runner. Taking inspiration from cyberpunk, players will be able to customize themselves and present themselves in many different ways. These customizations won't just be cosmetic; some customizations willboost a player's power and skills. This allows everyone to tailor their gameplay to their own personal tastes.

1 Game Modes And Gameplay

Marathon will not have a single-player campaign, and will focus solely on PvP gameplay. Players can be split up into teams called "crews" or go solo as they decide how they want their run to go. There's more than one way to 'win' a run, but the main objective is to stay alive at all costs. What that exactly entails depends on player to player. There are artifacts to collect and players could win by having the most number of artifacts, or by being the last one alive.

Every decision a player makes can affect not just the world around them, but the experience of other Runners as well. There are many ways that a Runner can make a name for themselves and rise to fame, and perhaps even infamy.

It's currently unknown what other types of game modes and gameplay will be featured in Marathon, but more will be revealed in future updates about the game. Marathon will feature both full cross-play and cross-save between all of its platforms.

Marathon will be available for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, and PC.
