Bungie are seeking an individual capable of chronicling Destiny's vast lore. A recent job posting by the studio details that Bungie is looking for a 'Historian to catalog the Destiny universe's narrative and world building rules' something that is likely easier said than done when one considers the scope of Destiny's universe. Some spoilers for the Destiny series may follow.

The position, officially for a 'Destiny Historian', will have the chosen individual tasked with creating 'story bibles' encapsulating the length and breadth of Destiny's galaxy-spanning lore. From Guardian patrol logs, to fourth-wall breaking dragon bones, the Historian will be tasked with trying to tie every cumulative storyline from Destiny together as well as recording the capabilities of more metaphysical forces in the series, like the Light and Darkness.

While the Destiny franchise has always offered a fairly in-depth lore repository to its players in the form of the Grimoire, which was made available to players in-game with the launch of Destiny 2The tales therein are often cryptic, missing key facts, or presenting misleading or false information based on in-universe folk tales or hearsay. Assumedly, Destiny's dedicated Historian will be tasked with sifting out the truth from the lies to provide Destiny's writers with accurate and relevant content to base future storylines upon.

While casual Destiny players can breeze past most of the game's lore and enjoy a solid, science-fantasy FPS game, veterans wanting to know more of the Destiny setting risk falling down a lore rabbit-hole of ancient cosmic horrors, time travel, weapons from parallel universes, and revelations that will change how the player looks at some of Destiny's story moments. It's little wonder why Bungie are bringing onboard an individual to more precisely collect the game's wildly varied story threads into a more coherent in-house telling of Destiny's events.

The immense scale of Destiny is only complicating further as the story continues to evolve with each Season. The Last City, perhaps one of the most perpetually beset settlements across fiction, is currently shrouded in a perpetual night. The cause of the issue is blamed on the robotic enemy faction known as the Vex, but it's entirely possible fans are witnessing Destiny 2's occasionally convoluted lore at play, with interference from a notable Hive god being heavily inferred.

With the backdrop of Destiny being on the scale concerning para-causal magic, millenia-long plans and the nature of life in the universe itself, Bungie seem to be making the right move in hiring a dedicated historian, not least to ease some of the headaches Bungie's writing staff must be wracked with given the depth and complexity of the long running game's plotlines.

Destiny 2 is out now on PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
