Already appearing in three Marvel Studios projects, Brie Larson's Carol Danvers looks to continue soaring high throughout the MCU's phase four, including in her next solo outing, The Marvels. Roughly a year away, Larson is already beginning to share her excitement for the highly-anticipated sequel.

Looking to build on the success of its predecessor, The Marvels will be directed this time by Nia DaCosta (Little Woods, Candyman). While details remain scarce, the film appears to move out of its 1990s setting and into the present day, as characters like Monica Rambeau from WandaVision and Kamala Khan (the new shape-shifting hero who idolizes Danvers and who will be making her MCU debut) are set to be some of main focuses of the film. Khan's character is set to have her own series for Disney Plus titled Ms. Marvel, which will serve as a set-up for The Marvels.

While it's still unclear where Captain Marvel and even the rest of the MCU will lead to, Larson has shared enthusiasm for continuing to play the comic book hero, adding the thrill she gets from donning the suit. "The novelty is not even close to wearing off. It's the thrill of a lifetime. It's the greatest honor and beyond my wildest expectations that I could help provide this symbol for people," Larson told Insider in a recent interview. The actress continued to express the importance of having a hero like Carol Danvers and what she means to so many people. "Three years have just been the beginning for me of getting to see what the importance of having characters like this can do for people. It can bring strength, it can bring confidence, it can bring community, and so we're just getting started, and I'm really excited for people to see what's next," Larson said.

Brie Larson Captain Marvel The Marvels

With The Marvels having wrapped filming back in November, Larson continues keep any details surrounding the film a secret, but what she did stress was how great DaCosta was as a director. "Our director, Nia DaCosta, is incredible in every way possible," Larson added. "She's such a leader, has such clear vision. I had amazing castmates and there's just a huge sense of camaraderie. I had a really beautiful experience and I really love working with my Marvel family, so it was all good for me."

It was back in October when DaCosta, who has been an avid Marvel fan most of her life, shared her fascination with heroes like Superman and Batman balancing their power and pain. She said she hopes to explore more of Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel's fears and the ways she handles being one of the most powerful beings in the universe.

Danvers last appeared in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings in a post-credits scene, where she was seen standing alongside other veteran Avengers members like Mark Ruffalo's Bruce Banner/Hulk. Aside from her upcoming sequel, with an Avengers 5 reportedly in early development, fans can expect to see Danvers at the top as one of the new big Avengers leading the way. The hero is also expected to play a role in the upcoming Secret Invasion series, which will follow Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury and Ben Mendelsohn's alien skrull Talos.

The Marvels is now set to release in theaters on February 17th, 2023.
