The Link in Breath of the Wild doesn't wear the iconic green tunic like the Links before him. Teasers and trailers for BotW featured this Link wearing a blue tunic instead and no matching hat. Dubbed the Champion's Tunic, this armor isn't part of a Set, but it has a unique ability of its own that makes it worth the trouble of getting.

At the start of Breath of the Wild, Link won't have the Champion's Tunic. He'll need to complete several main quests before 'unlocking' it. If BotW players follow the advice they receive on the Great Plateau, then they can get the Champion's Tunic early. Fortunately, for those that don't care for the main story, there's no in-game deadline for the tunic, so it can be picked up whenever.

Step 1: Get the Camera Rune

Once Link receives the paraglider, he'll be directed to Kakariko Village ("Seek Out Impa"). Find Impa, agree to listen to her story, and this will unlock "Locked Mementos." From there, Link will need to go to Hateno Village and find Purah. Follow the yellow objective marker on the map to find Hateno.

  1. Upon arriving in Hateno Village, Link should make his way up the hill to the Hateno Ancient Tech Lab. They'll need to light the forge of the lab.
  2. Look down on Hateno from the Tech Lab, and players should be able to spot a forge with a blue flame. Go there, light the nearby torch, and carry the flame back to the lab.

There are stone lanterns all around Hateno Village that lead up to the Tech Lab's own forge. Light those along the way to prevent the flame from going out .

After the forge has been lit, speak to Purah, and she'll unlock two runes on the Sheikah Slate: The Sheikah Sensor and the Camera Rune. Right now, the Sheikah Sensor isn't important. Unlocking the Slate has also opened up an album that reveals pictures of different areas around Hyrule. With these, return to Impa in Kakariko Village.

Step 2: Find a Captured Memory

As most players may have guessed, the photos on the album are related to Link's past. He'll need to visit all of them in order to complete the Locked Mementos main quest but to get the Champion's Tunic, he only needs to unlock one. Captured Memories will appear as golden circles that Link will need to stand on top of in order to trigger a cutscene (press A).

There's a Captured Memory at Lanayru Road - East Gate (which is close to Kakariko Village), but if players want to avoid watching cutscenes out of order, then they should hold off on this one. An easier Memory to get is Captured Memory 2, which is on the left side of Lake Kolomo. It's one of the closer and safer Memories near the Great Plateau.

After viewing a Memory, warp back to Kakariko Village and speak to Impa to get the Champion's Tunic. The tunic has a base defense of 5, but it allows players to see enemy HP, meaning it's worth upgrading.

Upgrading the Champion's Tunic

To upgrade the Champion's Tunic to its max potential, Link will need to have "freed" all four Great Fairies. They can be freed/unlocked in any order, so here's where they can be found:

  • There's one up the road past the Ta'loh Naeg Shrine.
  • Another can be found in the forest a bit southeast of Lake Akkala.
  • Another's in the lower-left corner of the map by the Gerudo Great Skeleton.
  • The last is in Piper Ridge, past the Tabantha Great Bridge.

Each time Link visits a Great Fairy, he'll need to pay a set amount of rupees. The first Great Fairy will charge 100, but the fourth will charge 10,000 rupees. Unfortunately, that 10,000 is the last key in getting the level 4/final upgrades to armor.

Here are the upgrade requirements for the Champion's Tunic:

Upgrade Level

Defense

Required Materials

1

8

  • x3 Silent Princess

2

14

  • x3 Silent Princess
  • x2 Shard of Farosh's Horn

3

22

  • x3 Silent Princess
  • x2 Shard of Naydra's Horn

4

32

  • x10 Silent Princess
  • x2 Shard of Dinraal's Horn

The good news is: Silent Princesses can be found right near the Fairy Fountains. There are usually 3 Silent Princesses per Fairy Fountain. The bad news is: getting the Shards from the three dragons that fly around Hyrule can be tricky. This requires farming materials from dragons by shooting at them with arrows as they fly by. Despite the unfriendly approach of obtaining materials, the dragons aren't aggressive and will fly off once Link has struck them.

Farosh and Dinraal can be found flying in the Faron and Tabantha Region, respectively, during specific times of day (in-game). Naydra, on the other hand, is part of a Hidden Shrine Sidequest.

If players haven't done so already, go to Mount Lanayru's peak. This is a boss fight that requires Link to stay airborne with the paraglider and shoot at the malice's yellow eyes growing on Naydra's body. This also unlocks the shrine hidden in the Spring of Wisdom. For saving Naydra, it'll give Link one of its scales as thanks. However, this scale is used to open the door to the shrine, and the Champion's Tunic requires Naydra's Horn, not Scale.

Here are the best areas to sit and wait for each dragon:

  • Farosh: Stand on the bridge by Rassla Lake by the Lakeside Stable. Rest until morning, and Farosh can be spotted flying under the bridge.
  • Dinraal: Wait at the Tabantha Great Bridge until 9-10:00pm/night (check the clock in the lower left corner of the screen).
  • Naydra: Go to the Lanayru Road - East Gate and wait until morning when Naydra begins its descent down Mount Lanayru.

An updraft will stir when the dragons are close, but if Link has Revali's Gale, he can use that, too. Since Link is farming horns from the dragons, he'll want to shoot an arrow at their horns. Shooting them in the mouth will give a tooth, shooting their hands gives a claw, and shooting anywhere along their body gives scales. Pay attention to where the shard falls.

If players miss any of the dragons or obtain the wrong material, they can start a fire with flint and firewood and rest until morning to restart the cycle.
