Out of the 100+ Shrines in Breath of the Wild, 43 of them are tied to Shrine Quests. As their name implies, these require Link to complete several steps in order to appear. One that players may find more frustrating than others is the "Under a Red Moon" Shrine Quest.

Breath of the Wild introduces the Blood Moon, an event that occurs when the moon turns blood-red and revives every monster that Link has killed. Players will stumble upon their first Blood Moon once they step outside the Great Plateau. A requirement for the "Under a Red Moon" is the occurrence of a Blood Moon. The second requirement is much easier albeit sillier.

Under a Red Moon Location

The location of the "Under a Red Moon" quest is on Washa's Bluff. Refer to the red marker on the above image. There are two ways of getting to Washa's Bluff:

  1. Travel south from the Tabantha Bride Stable.
  2. A quicker way is to paraglide from the Mogg Latan Shrine on Satori Mountain. Start from the mountain, glide over the Tamio River, and that will lead to Washa's Bluff.

From here, use Revali's Gale or climb the pillars to Kass. Speak to him to unlock the Shrine Quest and get a hint on how to solve it. Kass is relatively easy to find thanks to his accordion playing.

It's not necessary to speak to Kass. Players can unearth the Shrine without "accepting" the Shrine Quest.

How to Complete Under a Red Moon

Look down from the pillar where Kass is playing to see a Shrine Platform. If a Blood Moon is set to occur, it will glow orange. When it glows, that indicates the Shrine Quest can be completed. If there's no Blood Moon, the platform will not glow.

Players will need to do the following in order to complete the quest:

  1. Stand on the platform and remove all armor, sword, bow, and shield.
  2. Wait for a Blood Moon or trigger one.

If players are away when the Blood Moon starts to rise, quickly warp to the Mogg Latan Shrine and paraglide on over to Washa's Bluff. As long as the blood moon can be seen, the Shrine can be summoned from the platform. Remember to make sure Link isn't wearing anything or else nothing will happen even with the Blood Moon.

When Do Blood Moons Occur?

Blood Moons are more likely to occur if Link's killed multiple enemies or collected materials. There's no set number of enemies he has to slay or materials he needs to gather. The best way to trigger the Blood Moon is to just go around killing things. However, there are other ways of summoning a Blood Moon such as traveling around Hyrule or sitting by a campfire and waiting until night.

A campfire can be set up using Wood and Flint , and players can even set one up on the Shrine Platform at Washa's Bluff!

A Blood Moon will usually occur at the end of 7 in-game days. This is equivalent to about 3 hours in real time. Players can delay the Blood Moon timer by entering a Shrine, Divine Beast, or going into Hyrule Castle.

If players find that waiting by the campfire isn't working, they should go around and look for common enemies such as Bokoblins. Defeat them and collect any materials/weapons they drop. Fighting larger enemies like Stone Taluses or Hinox will also hasten the Blood Moon Cycle.

Finally, if players need an estimate of when a Blood Moon will occur, travel to the Dueling Peaks Stable. There's an NPC named Hino that has a weird obsession with the Blood Moon. He'll give players an idea of how many days are left until the next Blood Moon. Wait/rest at a campfire (until night) at Dueling Peaks Stable, then talk to Hino again. If he says the Blood Moon will occur, warp to the Mogg Latan Shrine and make way for Washa's Bluff.

Mijah Rokee Shrine Trial

Unfortunately for Link, it's not enough to sit in his trunks in the dead of night under a Blood Moon to get Mijah Rokee's blessing. Once the Mijah Rokee Shrine emerges, activate it, and go inside to start the Shrine Trial. This one is "A Modest Test of Strength." Hopefully players are experienced in these types of Trials, so they should just do what they normally do: Equip Link with his best armor/weapons and start the test.

Using a Guardian Weapon on a Guardian will deal 30% more damage than a regular Weapon - including the Master Sword .

Since this is a Modest Test, the Guardian shouldn't be too challenging. Make sure to dodge just when the Guardian swings its weapon to trigger Flurry Rush. Take cover behind the pillars when the Guardian is about to charge. If it hits the pillar, it'll be stunned for a few seconds, giving Link some time to lay in some attacks.

Once the Guardian is defeated, pick up any materials it drops. Then, go to the next room and open the chest to get a Frostblade. Finally, get the orb from the monk to put an end to this Shrine Quest.
