Breath of the Wild is full of references to previous Legend of Zelda games from landmark names to some of the accessories/armor that Link can equip. Back in 2017, the Master Trials DLC became available for download on June 30th. The first pack included various sidequests such as the EX Trial of the Sword and EX Strange Mask Rumors.

Those familiar with Twilight Princess may instantly recognize the accessory from the EX Treasure: Twilight Relic sidequest. While Midna does not make a physical appearance in Breath of the Wild, her Fused Shadow/helmet does, and it's available for Link to wear if he can find it. Fortunately for those that have the Expansion Pass (i.e., Master Trials), it's one accessory that can be collected very early.

How to Unlock Midna's Helmet

If BotW players haven't done so already, they'll need to buy the DLC bundle from the Nintendo Eshop. This will open up a series of EX Sidequests for Link to complete. Some quests such as the Trial of the Sword require BotW players to make some progress, but Midna's Helmet is not one of them.

  1. First, Link will need to get the Paraglider from the Old Man on the Great Plateau. This is essentially a "tutorial" stage of sorts, so it shouldn't take too long.
  2. After getting the Paraglider, use it to escape the Great Plateau and take the first step into Hyrule to trigger the "EX" sidequest announcements.

It's recommended for those getting Midna's Helmet to place a marker over the Central Tower , which is the tower closest to the castle .

Midna's Helmet Location

There's a journal by a character named Misko in the Outpost Ruins. However, players don't have to read the entry about the Fused Shadow/Midna's Helmet to make it appear. The hint BotW gives regarding the helmet is that it's near some temple ruins by the Regencia River. Since there are ruins practically everywhere in Breath of the Wild, this hint may not be very helpful.

Midna's Helmet is buried in the Sage Temple Ruins. Players can spot its exact location by the blue marker on the above image. They'll need to use the Magnesis Rune to dig up the chest, which is purple with EX initials on it. BotW players should know how to swap runes by now, but in case they forgot, simply press up on the D-pad to pull up the "Runes" Menu. Select a rune by tapping left or right on the D-pad.

The quickest way to the Sage Temple Ruins is by going west from the Central Tower. The ruins are southwest of Giant's Forest and northwest of Mount Daphnes. Refer to the below image:

Midna's Helmet Stats

Midna's helmet has a defense of 7 and adds +1 Guardian Resistance. Unfortunately, it can't be upgraded by the Great Fairies, and it's not part of an armor set. However, if BotW players are picking it up early in their playthrough, it's great headgear for Link to wear until he finds something better.

Remember: the helmet isn't obtainable without the DLC. If Link goes to the Sage Temple Ruins without the EX Treasure: Twilight Relic sidequest, then the chest won't exist. Also, if BotW players are worried they're too far in the story, the helmet can be found at any point beyond the Great Plateau so long as the Expansion Pass has been downloaded.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is available for Nintendo Switch.
