Breath Of The Wild: Hidden Areas You Didn't Know Existed

From a heart-shaped pond to a town based on Wind Waker's Outset Island, here are some neat hidden areas in Breath of the Wild you may have missed.

It can be dangerous to journey out into the unknown for players searching for these stables for the first time. Knowing exactly where these stables are and how to find them will help even the most experienced players fill out their maps of Hyrule. Since players will spend a ton of time roaming the open world and uncovering its secrets, it's important to have access to a reliable mount that will speed up the journey from point A to point B, and knowing where the game's stables will help out a lot in this regard.

Updated on May 5, 2024, by Ritwik Mitra: While Tears of the Kingdom may feature more mechanics that make the most of its engine, many people consider Breath of the Wild to be the superior game simply because of the massive impact it had on the gaming industry when it launched. Players hadn't seen an open-world game with systems so seamless that they not only streamlined the genre experience, but innovated on it in ways that increased immersion, letting players explore at their own pace and uncover a wealth of amazing content that made exploration and discovery one of the game's best aspects. During their adventures in Hyrule, players will happen upon several stables where they can register horses, find sidequests, and take a breather after exploring a world that is both friendly and hostile in equal capacity, and this list has been updated to feature more details about those stables.

What To Know About Stables In Breath Of The Wild

Legend of Zelda Stable

For the most part, players would only board and take horses from stables whenever they happen upon these settlements. However, there are several other things that players can accomplish in these stables if they decide to explore these areas a bit.

These areas normally feature merchants, some of whom might have valuable goods as well. Given the sheer volume of loot players can find in Breath of the Wild, selling some of the stuff they have isn't the worst idea in the world. Aside from this, some stables have recipes that players can note down to create certain concoctions and recipes later down the line when they have the chance.

Some stables also have important NPCs that can start questlines for players to sink their teeth into. These areas also have dogs that can guide Link to treasure if he decides to befriend them, which generally requires a bit of food and some playing around with the mutt.

In general, players should explore every area they happen upon in Breath of the Wild, and this applies to all the stables in the game. Of course, Breath of the Wild is pretty rewarding to players who are meticulous explorers, and some players can either take it easy later on in the game or just head to Ganon directly if they wish. After all, most players will have the tools required to defeat Ganon after playing the game for long enough.

15 Dueling Peaks Stable In West Necluda

Notable Side Quests: "Misko, The Great Bandit" And "Wild Horses"

Dueling Peaks Stable botw
  • Beside the road heading north from the Big Twin Bridge, located east of the Dueling Peaks

The Dueling Peaks Stable is likely the first stable new players will encounter in Hyrule. Found just east of the Dueling Peak mountains in the West Necluda region, Link is bound to stumble past this stable on his journey to Kakariko Village. Following the road due east from the Great Plateau will take players straight through the mountains and to their first-ever Hyrule stable.

Players can start the side quest "Misko, the Great Bandit," and hunt for some treasure, otherwise, the Wild Horses side-quest is a great incentive for players to tame their first horse and get riding around Hyrule! Breath of the Wild is known for having a great introductory sequence, with even the first stable being pretty eventful in its own right.

14 Highland Stable Near The Faron Sea

Notable Side Quests: "The Horseback Hoodlums" And "EX Ancient Horse Rumors"

Highland Stable botw
  • Located on the Fural Plain

Following the main road to the southeast of the Great Plateau will lead players across Lake Hylia and eventually take them to the Highland Stables in the Faron Grassland region of Hyrule. Surrounded by rolling fields, the Highland Stable is a great place to practice horseback riding and mounted combat.

Don’t forget to complete the side-quest "The Horseback Hoodlums" and save Highland Stable from a gang of Bokoblins causing trouble in the grasslands for a Swift Carrot reward. Players with the DLC can also complete the "EX Ancient Horse Rumors" quest to find the Ancient Saddle and Bridle.

13 Lakeside Stable By Lake Floria

Notable Side Quests: "Thunder Magnet"

Lakeside Stable botw
  • South of Lake Floria

Just south of Faron Tower, hidden away in the lush jungle of the Faron region is Lakeside Stable. Set right next to Lake Floria, Lakeside Stable is a great spot to set off and search for some mighty bananas, a chef’s favorite attack-boosting fruit. Grabbing the Axe off the top of the stable will end the pesky thunderstorm plaguing the stable and complete the "Thunder Magnet" side-quest at the same time, rewarding players with the Rubber Helm, a piece of the Rubber Armor set!

Given that this stable is in an area that features many powerful enemies, it's easy to see why most players will be more than happy to happen upon this stable after a wealth of tough encounters. It lets them enjoy a much-needed breather and interact with friendly people after a lengthy stretch of exploration.

12 Riverside Stable Between Hyrule Field And West Necluda

Notable Side Quests: "The Royal Guard’s Gear" And "A Royal Recipe"

Riverside Stable botw
  • Hard to miss in Hyrule Field

North-east of the Great Plateau, along the Hylia River, players will discover Riverside Stable. Another good early stable for new players, the Riverside Stable offers a rare safe zone in the Central Hyrule region, hidden away from those deadly guardian laser beams. Given how threatening Guardians are no matter how much progress players make in the game, it's easy to see why players would love a respite from their damaging attacks and relentless pursuit.

Players should make it a priority to grab "The Royal Guard’s Gear" and "A Royal Recipe" side-quests while here. These quests can only be completed in the endgame, but noting them down doesn't hurt. It's not like the game forces players to head to Hyrule Castle and finish this quest the very moment they catch wind of this information.

11 Wetland Stable In The Lanayru Wetlands

Notable Side Quests: "Riverbed Reward"

Wetland Stable botw
  • Situated alongside the Hylia River

Following the Hylia River north past Riverside Stable will bring Link to the Wetland Stable. Located just west of the Lanayru Wetlands, this stable is a great spot to start a journey heading up into the Zora Domain lying just to the east, following a grueling mountain climb through an army of Lizalfos.

Players can complete the "Riverbed Reward" quest by pulling a chest out of the river. Telling Izra what was found inside will gift players a Royal Broadsword. Breath of the Wild is full to the brim with secrets, with its stables being no exception to this rule either.

10 Woodland Stable Near Eldin Canyon

Notable Side Quests: "Balloon Fight" And "EX Strange Mask Rumors"

Woodland Stable botw
  • Alongside the road in northern Hyrule, right between East Hyrule Castle and Eldin Canyon

Woodland Stable can be found in the northeast corner of Central Hyrule, equidistant between Death Mountain and Hyrule Castle. Following the trail leading past Woodland Stable to the north will bring players to Woodland Tower and then to the Great Hyrule Forest, where players can pick up the Master Sword.

Link can also find the recipe for hasty vegetable curry, a dish to make Link move like the wind. Players can complete the "Balloon Fight" quest as well as the "EX Strange Mask Rumors" quest here. By this point, players should have accumulated enough strength to give Ganon a challenge... but more work should be done regardless.

9 Foothill Stable Between Zora's Domain And Goron City

Notable Side Quests: "A Landscape Of A Stable"

Foothill Stable botw
  • Right along the main road that leads further into the Eldin Canyon region, located in eastern Trilby Valley

Smack dab in the middle between Zora's Domain and Goron City lies the Foothill Stable. Under the foot of Death Mountain is an ominous place for a stable, but Foothill Stable manages to make the best of it.

Notable Side Quests: "A Gift For The Great Fairy"

Tabantha Bridge Stable botw
  • East of the Tabantha Great Bridge

Due East on the map, the Tabantha Bridge Stable stands on the Hyrule side of Tabantha Bridge, crossing Tanagar Canyon (the huge scar running across the map’s northwest side). It's a pretty prominent location that players will be frequenting time and time again, especially since the pathway to Rito Village can be pretty challenging at times.
