Since Link can cook meals in Breath of the Wild, players are going to want to farm various creatures and materials. Most species will generate different effects for the meal. Those looking to gain a Temporary Heart Boost will want to cook Hearty creatures, such as the Hearty Blueshell Snails.
These snails are one of the two species found in Breath of the Wild. As their name indicates, they are blue and like to reside in shallow water. This makes them quite easy to farm if players disregard their rarity. Players can start their Hearty Blueshell Snail hunting by looking to the eastern half of Hyrule.
Hearty Blueshell Snail Habitats
The Hyrule Compendium says that Hearty Blushell Snails can be found in the Lanayru Sea and the Necluda Sea. However, this is hardly specific. Players will want to look along the shores of the following locations:
- Lanayru Bay
- Lurelin Village
- Korne Beach
- Rimba Beach
Snails won't move when Link approaches, or rather they won't move fast enough. This means players won't need to rush over and grab them. They may be difficult to see in clearer waters thanks to the blue shell, but as long as players are looking by the shoreline, they should find some.
Lanayru Bay
From the Rucco Maag Shrine head east to the Lanayru Bay. If players don't have the Rucco Maag Shrine activated, then they can start from Zora's Domain and head southeast. They can also reach Lanayru Bay by heading southwest from Horon Lagoon (Shai Yota Shrine).
Refer to the light blue outline on the above image for the exact location where Hearty Blueshell Snails reside.
Lurelin Village, Korne Beach, and Rimba Beach
At the very southeast of Hyrule is Lurelin Village. Players can reach this by heading south from Lanayru Province or east from Faron Province. There are two Shrines near Lurelin Village that players can Fast Travel to if they've been activated. The one that Link is more likely to unlock first is the Yah Rinn Shrine, which is on a north hill overlooking Lurelin Village.
Hearty Blueshell Snails can be found on the shore of Lurelin Village. If players don't mind doing some walking, the snails can also be farmed on the Korne Beach and Rimba Beach shores. Both of these are south of Lurelin Village.
Hearty Blueshell Snail: Farming & Cooking Tips
If players are still having problems farming Hearty Blueshell Snails, they'll want to take a picture of one using the Camera Rune. This can be unlocked at the Hateno Ancient Tech Lab. Players can then use the Sheikah Sensor+ to track the location of Hearty Blueshell Snails. This is an upgrade of the Sheikah Sensor, which can be unlocked, again, at Hateno Ancient Tech Lab in exchange for Guardian parts.
To track Hearty Blueshell Snails, do the following:
- Open the map with (-).
- Tap R-button twice to scroll over to the Hyrule Compendium tab.
- Look for the Hearty Blueshell Snail under Creatures, then select Y-button to track it.
The tracker can be turned off by going back into the Map with ( -) and pressing Y-button to Change Target .
Hearty Blueshell Snails will fully heal Link and give him Temporary Heart(s) when cooked into meals. Temporary Hearts are yellow hearts added to Link's current health bar. Unlike regular hearts, Temporary Hearts cannot be recovered by consuming food. If Link takes damage, he'll lose the Temporary Heart.
Keep in mind that they have to be the only ingredient that gives an effect(s) . Mixing two ingredients with two different effects (ex: Hearty Blueshell Snail + Spicy Pepper) will cancel them out.
Players can cook Hearty Blueshell Snails by themselves to get the Temporary Hearts, but there are several meals that can use this ingredient:
Meal | Ingredient(s) |
---|---|
Meat and Seafood Fry |

Seafood Skewer |
|
Seafood Paella |
|
Fish Pie |
|
Seafood Riceballs |

What's For Dinner? Sidequest
Players should speak to Kiana in Lurelin Village. Kiana can be seen standing with her son, Kinov, on the porch of her house during the day. Doing so will start the What's For Dinner? sidequest. For this, she'll request the following ingredients:
- Hearty Blueshell Snail (x1)
- Goat Butter (x1)
Goat Butter can be bought from the general stores in these villages:
- Kakariko Village
- Rito Village
- Agnust (Merchant) at Dueling Peaks Stable
They'll be 12 rupees per bar, so they're fairly cheap and players should have no problem paying for them. If players like to do their own cooking, they should buy everything in stock. Each merchant usually has x3 Goat Butter.
Return to Kiana to receive 50 rupees and a free Seafood Paella. Players that want to cook Seafood Paella after this quest will want to remember that the recipe calls for a Mighty or Armored Porgy. These can also be found in Lurelin Village. Players struggling to catch them by swimming should consider tossing a bomb into the waters.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is available on Nintendo Switch.
