In Breath of the Wild, players can cook their own food to restore HP or gain buffs. Most meals can be thrown together, but then there are the more-complex recipes such as desserts or stews. Link can gather just about every ingredient from the wild, but some are not as easily accessible.
Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask allowed players to get Milk from cows by playing Epona's Song. Breath of the Wild does not have this mechanic, making Fresh Milk a store-exclusive material. To make matters worse, there are only three merchants in all of BotW who keep it in stock.
Where to Buy Fresh Milk
The only way to get Fresh Milk is to buy it, but there are some side quests that give Fresh Milk as a reward. Fresh Milk can be purchased from East Wind, the general store in Hateno Village. Hateno is to the east of Dueling Peaks and Kakariko Village. Players that head straight to Kakariko Village after completing the Great Plateau will be directed to Hateno Village by Impa. Hateno Village is home to Hateno Ancient Tech Lab, which is where Link can obtain the Camera Rune and enhance the current Sheikah Runes such as the Bombs and Magnesis.
There are also two traveling merchants that sell Fresh Milk: Agus and Yammo:
Location | Stock (Fresh Milk) | Things to Note | |
---|---|---|---|
Agus |

Yammo |

Fresh Milk Cost
Fresh Milk costs 12 rupees per piece, making them fairly cheap for those on a new playthrough. East Wind sells three at a time, so that can potentially total to 36 rupees. If players enjoy cooking in BotW, then it's recommended to buy the entire stock when they visit. This includes if they want to buy from Agus or Yammo.
Complete "The Sheep Rustlers" Side Quest
Another way to get Fresh Milk (and for free!) is to complete The Sheep Rustlers side quest. This can be picked up from Koyin at the Hateno Pasture in Hateno Village. The pasture is between the Hateno Village inn and the Hateno Ancient Tech Lab (refer to the above image for its location).
Standing outside the house during the day is a young woman named Koyin. Speak to her, and she'll tell Link about monsters raiding the pastures and taking sheep. Players will then need to defeat all the enemies at Hateno Beach. The beach is located southeast from Hateno Ancient Tech Lab. Players can literally glide down from the Hateno Ancient Tech Lab hill to the Hateno Beach.
Players will know they're at the right location if they see a penned-in sheep.
Once they're taken care of, return to the Hateno Pastures to get the quest reward. Koyin will give Link x10 Fresh Milk, which is just as much as he would get from Yammo on rainy days. Also, these monsters will not respawn during a Blood Moon. They are exclusive to "The Sheep Rustlers" side quest. Meaning Link can't keep going to Hateno Beach, kill them, then return to Koyin for another reward.
Where to Use Fresh Milk
Fresh Milk is used for desserts and soups. Heartier meals such as Creamy Heart Soup require Fresh Milk, so it's best to save them for entrées that will restore a lot of health. The following meals require Fresh Milk:
