The Chillfin Trout are just one of the many species of fish in Breath of the Wild. As their name implies, these trout prefer colder climates, so players won't have any luck searching warmer waters. Those just starting a BotW playthrough will have some time before they'll find their first Chillfin Trout.

Chillfin Trout in Breath of the Wild aren't as vital as other armor-enhancing fish such as the Hyrule Bass. Like any other creature, they can be added to the Hyrule Compendium. Thus, if BotW players are going for 100% completion, they'll need to grab its picture with the Sheikah Slate.

Chillfin Trout Locations

Players can buy Chillfin Trout (x2) at the general store in Zora's Domain for 24 rupees a piece. The rest of the Chillfin Trout are going to need to be farmed from their natural habitats. The Chillfin Trout are found in the Hebra Mountains and the Tabantha Frontier, but players should specifically look for the Hebra Plunge in the Hebra Mountains.

The Hebra Plunge is situated northeast of Rito Village and west of Hebra Tower. Players can get to the Hebra Plunge faster by Fast Traveling to the Lanno Kooh Shrine. However, Link's going to take damage swimming through the frigid waters surrounding the Shrine regardless of the armor he's wearing. Make sure to have plenty of Hearts or Stamina if traveling from the Lanno Kooh Shrine to the Hebra Plunge.

Go to the red marker on the above image. There will be a waterfall and Link can dive into the Hebra Plunge. There's a column in the middle of the plunge that Link can stand on. Since he'll be surrounded by mountains, Link will want to climb up the column to avoid drowning/running out of stamina.

Build platforms with Cryonisis if necessary. There are Chillfin Trout swimming in the belly of the Hebra Plunge. They can be hard to spot from far away, so keep an eye out for their light blue bodies.

Avoid bombing/shooting the Chillfin Trout!

While this is a very quick way to gather fish , any creature (ex: fish, moose, etc) that is killed in frigid areas will turn into frozen food if it's not picked up fast enough. If Link bombs/kills the Chillfin Trout, it will remain a Chillfin Trout for a few seconds before turning into Frozen Trout. Fortunately, Frozen Trout does provide heat-resistance when consumed, but it can't be cooked .

The best way to gather Chillfin Trout in the Hebra Plunge is by diving into the waters and swimming up to one . Press A before it can take off.

Where to Use Chillfin Trout

The best part about Chillfin Trout is that they're not required for upgrading armor. They can be sold to any merchant, or they can be used in Seafood Recipes. Depending on the amount of Chillfin Trout added in a recipe, the duration of the meal's heat-resistant buff will vary. Each recipe can have up to 5 ingredients.

Here are just a few examples of meals that can use Chillfin Trout:

Ingredients

Creamy Seafood Soup

  1. Chillfin Trout
  2. Fresh Milk
  3. Any Vegetable or Herb (ex: Hyrule Herb)
  4. Rock Salt

Seafood Rice Balls

  1. Hylian Rice
  2. Chillfin Trout (x1-x4)

Spicy Peppered Seafood

  1. Spicy Pepper
  2. Chillfin Trout

Since meals that use Chillfin Trout as an ingredient provide heat-resistance, it's better to eat them only when Link is exploring the Gerudo Wasteland. Players can also sell the meals they cook. The stronger the meal (ie: more hearts, longer effects), the more a merchant is willing to pay.
