There's absolutely no shortage of side quests in Breath of the Wild. Players can receive side quests from NPCs with a red exclamation point/side quest marker over their head. Most of the rewards from side quests are quite modest, but they may be worth the time if Link is short on Rupees.

"A Royal Recipe" is a quest that players can potentially unlock near the start of their playthrough. However, completing it involves entering Hyrule Castle, making it rather dangerous for those on a new Breath of the Wild file. There are also several steps in completing "A Royal Recipe" that can make this side quest last fo a good chunk of a playthrough. Thus, it's advised that players tackle "A Royal Recipe" after they've explored most of Hyrule.

How to Get "A Royal Recipe" Sidequest

"A Royal Recipe" can be accepted as soon as players leave the Great Plateau. There's a man named Gotter at the Riverside Stable who wants to try some cuisine from Hyrule Castle. There are various ways to reach Riverside Stable, but it's recommended to start from the Central Tower, Great Plateau, or the Lanayru Tower.

  • Central Tower: Head southeast from Central Tower. There are many Guardians near this tower as well as a Guardian Stalker, so be careful.
  • Great Plateau/Plateau Tower: Paraglide northeast from the Great Plateau.
  • Lanayru Tower: Take the path west of Lanayru Tower and then north to reach Riverside Stable. Alternatively, paraglide northwest from the top of the tower.

Once players reach the Riverside Stable, they should Activate the Wahgo Katta Shrine to establish a Travel Point. This will come in handy later. Complete the Shrine trial to obtain the Spirit Orb.

After this, players can find Gotter outside during the daynear the Cooking Pot. During the night or if it's raining, he can be found inside the stable. Speak to him, and he'll drop a hint on how to complete "A Royal Recipe" side quest. There are cookbooks in the Hyrule Castle library that Link can read to obtain the recipe for two different types of desserts: Fruitcake and Monster Cake.

If players are determined to break into Hyrule Castle immediately, they should head in from the right. If the Central Tower has been activated, look for the island between Crenel Hills and the Hyrule Castle Moat. Players are going to have to glide over the moat and climb up the cliff.

If players have the Expansion Pass , then they should get Majora's Mask from the Kolomo Garrison Ruins after leaving the Great Plateau.

Refer to the below image for the exact route on how to break into the Library:

  1. Once players reach the top of the cliff, they should look around for a waterfall.
  2. Glide past the waterfall and climb the castle walls (blue pin on the above image).
  3. Head west from here, and there will be a broken ceiling thatleads into the library. Drop in and use the paraglider to avoid taking damage.

If players are just starting their playthrough, be very careful as the Library is full of Black Lizalfos equipped with powerful weapons. These monsters can easily 1HKO Link this early in BotW if he's not careful. Unfortunately, the Lizalfos are just about everywhere in the Library, so it'll be impossible to avoid them. Of course, if players equip Majora's Mask, the Lizalfos will leave Link alone.

Look for an open book on one of the tables on the first floor. This will have the recipe for Fruitcake. Read it over quickly, then open the map with (-). Select X-button to Leave Hyrule Castle.

"A Royal Recipe" Walkthrough: Fruitcake Recipe

The next step in completing "A Royal Recipe" is to bake a fruitcake. In case players forgot what was in the Hyrule cookbook, here's what Link will need:

  1. Tabantha Wheat
  2. Cane Sugar
  3. Goat Butter
  4. Apple or Wildberry
  5. A different fruit:
    • Apple or Wildberry (depends on the first fruit. If using an apple as Fruit Ingredient #1, use a wildberry as Fruit Ingredient #2, and vice versa)
    • Palm Fruit
    • Hearty Durian
    • Mighty Banana
    • Hydromelon
    • Voltfruit

Since this fruitcake will be given to Gotter, avoid putting high-quality ingredients (ie: Hearty Durian) into the cake. Just use an apple and a wildberry .

Here's where each ingredient can be found:

Location

Tabantha Wheat

Cane Sugar

  • Buy from Rito Village, Korok Forest (Deku Tree), or Goron City.

Fruit

  • Hanging from trees just about anywhere in Hyrule (Apple)
  • Hebra Mountains (Wildberry)
  • Gerudo Highlands (Wildberry)
  • Faron Grasslands (Hearty Durian, Mighty Banana)
  • Gerudo Wasteland (Hydromelon, Voltfruit)
  • Lorn's Fruit Stand in Gerudo Town (Hydromelon, Voltfruit, Hearty Durian)

In order to cook, Link will need the help of a Cooking Pot. These can be found in every village and at every stable. It may be easier to just warp to Riverside Stable and bake the fruitcake there.

  1. Go into the Inventory with (+).
  2. Use the right stick to scroll over to the Materials tab.
  3. Select one of the necessary ingredients and select Hold.
  4. Drop them into the pot with A-button when the action button says Cook.

"A Royal Recipe" Side Quest Reward

Find Gotter at the Riverside Stable and speak to him to turn in the quest. Again, avoid using hearty ingredients when baking for Gotter. Link's reward won't be any grander if the cake restores more HP, so put in minimal effort here.

As thanks for helping him, Gotter will give Link 100 Rupees. The reward may not be worth traveling the west side of Hyrule and traversing the dangerous Hyrule Castle. However, Rupees are Rupees, and 100 of them can cover the cost of cheap ingredients.
