The first two seasons of Bosch: Legacy on Amazon Freevee have struck a good balance of introducing new characters while expanding supporting characters from the original Bosch series. Both Maddie Bosch and Honey Chandler started out making guest appearances in Bosch, but they became series regulars as the show progressed. When Bosch: Legacy began in 2022, both characters were set up asco-leads to Harry Bosch.

The spin-off show has featured some special guest appearances from former members of the original Bosch series, which has delighted fans of the show. However, none of these returning characters felt like mere fan service. All of their returns served a purpose to the overall narrative. It helps that Bosch: Legacy is still set in Los Angeles, which makes the return of many characters organically possible. And it looks like this is set to continue in Season 3.

Harry Bosch

bosch kicking doors in

Harry Bosch is still the central focus in Bosch: Legacy, appearing in every episode. However, he no longer works for the LAPD, having left to become a private investigator. But he's still the same old Bosch, doing everything he can to solve the case he's working on.

He eventually relents and goes to work for Honey Chandler as her P.I. on the Lexi Parks case. This is partly to cover up for him and Chandler discussing the FBI case against them for their involvement in Carl Rogers' untimely death, after Rogers hired hitmen to kill Chandler in season 7 of Bosch.

Honey Chandler

chandler and bosch on the case

Though this defense lawyer starts as Harry Bosch's nemesis in the first season of Bosch, she ends up becoming one of his closest allies. By the time Chandler turns up in Bosch: Legacy, she's joined forces with Bosch to defeat a mutual enemy in Carl Rogers.

By season 2, they are directly working together on the Lexi Parks case. Chandler is also instrumental in helping track down Maddie's kidnapper, Kurt Dockweiler. Her character has evolved over the years, and is now one of Bosch's confidantes.

Maddie Bosch

maddie bosch in uniform

When Maddie first turned up as a teenager on her father's doorstep all those years ago, their relationship was strained by his absence as she was growing up. Fast-forward nearly a decade, and father and daughter are closer than ever. Maddie is a rookie cop in the LAPD when Bosch: Legacy starts.

Her big storyline in season 2 sees her getting kidnapped by a vicious assailant, and she must deal with the effects of this trauma as the season progresses. She also joins a brand-new task force, following in her father's footsteps by rising through the ranks quickly.

Jerry Edgar

jerry edgar

Harry's Bosch's former partner in the LAPD has made three appearances in Bosch: Legacy. The took place in Season 1, a short cameo at the end of episode six's ''Chain of Authenticity.'' He also returned for the first two episodes of Season 2 to investigate the kidnapping of Maddie Bosch.

There is a spin-off currently in the works based on his character, so don't rule out more appearances in Bosch: Legacy in the future as well.

Irvin Irving

irvin irving

It was revealed that Chief Irvin Irving had retired from the LAPD when he returned briefly in the Season 2 finale, ''A Step Ahead." Fans had mixed emotions about his return, as the actor who played him, Lance Reddick, had died since filming the appearance.

Irving returns to meet with Honey Chandler to discuss her plans to run for District Attorney, with the savvy lawyer seeking an endorsement from Harry Bosch's former boss.

Barrel Johnson and Crate Moore

crate, bosch and barrel in suits

This crime action franchise can be serious, but many of its lighter moments come from the comedic double act of Crate and Barrel. The aging detectives appeared throughout the original series, and they turn up to help Bosch do surveillance on Carl Rogers in Season 1 of Bosch: Legacy.

They also appear in Season 2. Bosch warns them to watch out for the FBI, as they might be coming to investigate them for their involvement in the Carl Rogers matter. They both reveal that they are retired now, so they aren't too worried.

Sgt John Mankiewicz

mank in uniform

The popular sergeant in the LAPD is simply known as 'Mank' to the people who know him well. He was a mainstay in the original series, and has appeared in nine episodes over two seasons of Bosch: Legacy.

His appearances feel organic, as Maddie Bosch now works at the LAPD and runs into him on many occasions during the show. When the police find the gun Ellis was going to shoot Harry Bosch with at the end of season 2, before Maddie turns up to shoot him dead, Mank gives Maddie the heads-up, so she doesn't have to worry about internal affairs.

Rondell Pierce and Christina Vega

pierce and vega

Pierce and Vega are colleagues of Harry Bosch's from the original Bosch series. In Bosch: Legacy season 2, they turn up to help Harry Bosch with the Lexi Parks murder case. They have been assigned to investigate the murder of James Allen, who was the lover of prime suspect, David Foster.

They appear in two episodes, and don't have much to do other than pass information on to Bosch. Still, it was good to see more familiar faces, and there's a chance they might turn up again.

Preston Borders

Maddie confronting bosch at the end of season 2

The big cliffhanger at the end of Season 2 saw Maddie answer Bosch's phone and accept a collect call from an inmate at Wasco St Prison. It’s Preston Borders, a murderer who Harry Bosch arrested years ago. He reveals he killed Kurt Dockweiler at Harry’s request.

Preston Borders first appeared in season 5 of Bosch, when the murder case was re-opened due to questions over Bosch's handling of the matter. Borders is almost certain to return in season 3 to stir up more trouble.

Scott Anderson

scott anderson

Scott Anderson is a journalist from the original Bosch series, and is a cause of irritation for Bosch and his co-workers.

He returns in season 2 of Bosch: Legacy, sniffing around the FBI's investigation into Bosch and Chandler. By the end of the season, Anderson wants to know why the grand jury investigation was halted. He suggests to Bosch that it was Chandler who sent him a copy of the subpoena, so he would leak it.

Who could return in Bosch: Legacy season 3?

bosch/chandler/maddie

Lt Grace Billets

grace billets with a beer, on the phone

One of the main characters in Bosch, Lt Grace Billets was promoted to captain at the end of Season 7. Despite this, we haven't seen her in Bosch: Legacy. She was a close ally of Harry Bosch throughout the years, often acting as mediator between Bosch and the bureaucratic nonsense in the LAPD.

She is a fan favorite, so it's likely she will turn up at some point in the show's run.

Jimmy Robertson

robertson

Detective Jimmy Robertson appeared in the latter stages of the original Bosch series. He is yet to make an appearance in Bosch: Legacy, but his character was well received by fans. If his involvement in a story makes sense, he could feasibly return in Season 3.

Julius ''Edge'' Edgewood

edgewood and edgar

Edgewood is a recurring character throughout the original Bosch series. He was initially the supervising officer for Julia Brasher. From season 2 onwards, he partnered with Officer Ray Powers.

Edgewood's big storyline in Bosch was his involvement in the fatal shooting of Miguel Vasquez, which caused political unrest. He was never a major player, but an appearance by him in season 3 of Legacy can't be ruled out.

Jun Park

jun park

Jun Park is Irvin Irving's second wife, and she plays a pivotal and supportive role in the later seasons of Bosch. Lance Reddick's cameo in the last episode of Bosch: Legacy season 2 will sadly be his last appearance due to the actor's death, but there is a desire to see his story wrapped up and acknowledged in season 3.

The re-introduction of Jun Park would make sense if Bosch: Legacy chooses to kill off Irving, as it would make more sense to explain his absence.
