  • Kurt Dockweiler is the rapist who kidnapped Maddie Bosch in season 2 of Bosch: Legacy.
  • Harry Bosch most likely did not hire Preston Borders to kill Maddie's kidnapper.
  • Bosch's quest for justice has pushed him to the brink, but he has not crossed the line into murder.

Ever since Harry Bosch first appeared on Amazon Prime in 2014, he's been a tough figure in the quest for justice. Whether it's a case involving corruption at the highest level, or an unfortunate murder victim, Bosch would do anything he could to find the culprit and make them pay for their crimes. Despite his unorthodox tactics, Bosch was never a corrupt cop, despite the suggestions of Honey Chandler at the very start of the original Bosch series. He had certain techniques that were questionable, but he was a fantastic detective who didn't need to break the law to solve a case.

As the Bosch universe has expanded, and Harry Bosch became a private investigator in the spin-off, Bosch: Legacy, the character has evolved somewhat, with his tactics having to take a darker turn in order to solve cases, without the backing of the LAPD. However, Bosch is also without the constraints of upholding the badge which has loosened his moral compass when it comes to the cases he takes on in the private sector. Bosch's code was pushed to the limit with the kidnapping of his daughter, Maddie in Bosch: Legacy season 2, with the jazz-loving former detective willing to do anything to rescue his daughter. But has Harry Bosch's quest for justice gone one step too far, leading him to murder?

Kurt Dockweiler is a property inspector who Maddie Bosch is investigating in relation to a rapist known as the 'Screen Cutter' who wears a luchador mask when carrying out his brutal assaults. Maddie initially makes contact with him after finding his phone number on an inspection notice. Dockweiler claims to know nothing about the rapes, but he then looks her up on the internet, which comes across very suspicious. Turns out, Dockweiler is the rapist, and he attacks Maddie in her apartment. After a fight, he knocks her out using chloroform and kidnaps her.

In season 2 of the police drama, it is discovered that Kurt Dockweiler was adopted after being brought up in a religious cult that operated in the Mojave Desert at a place called “Zzyzx” and this is where Dockweiler is holding Maddie.

Chandler arranges for a helicopter to take her and Bosch to the site where they find Maddie buried in a wooden box underground.

Dockweiler hands himself in to the police and hires James Rafferty as his lawyer. Rafferty is not a criminal lawyer but someone who works with abused children. Dockweiler’s sealed records that Bosch found, reveal that he suffered sexual abuse at the hands of the Cult members, and Rafferty has represented him ever since.

Did Harry Bosch hire Preston Borders to kill Maddie's kidnapper?

Maddie confronting bosch at the end of season 2

Harry Bosch had been teetering on the brink of crossing the line for many years in his role as an LAPD detective, but he was never considered to be a dirty cop. He never took bribes or broke blatant rules when investigating a case, but he did butt heads with his superiors at various times, thanks to his unique brand of detective work. But he was always concerned about doing the right thing, and he would get frustrated when the politics in the LAPD got in the way of justice. He left the LAPD for this exact reason after a bust up with Chief Irvin Irwing (portrayed by the late Lance Reddick), and set up a private investigation company, but when his daughter Maddie was kidnapped, the code he followed in the LAPD went out the window.

Bosch had already muddied the waters with his involvement in the Carl Rogers case, clearly crossing a line to help Chandler with the man who tried to kill her. But when Maddie intercepts a call to her father from a convict called Preston Borders at the end of Bosch: Legacy season 2, he tells Maddie he has killed Kurt Dockweiler on Bosch's orders. It gets the audience questioning whether the former detective has fully crossed the line and ordered the hit on Maddie's tormentor.

Preston Borders is a rapist and murderer who was arrested by Harry Bosch way back in 1987. Bosch believed that Borders was responsible for three murders, but he was only prosecuted and convicted of one. Borders appears in five episodes of Season 5 of Bosch, and is portrayed by Chris Browning. Borders case is up for review with questions surrounding Bosch's handling of the case. Bosch insists everything was done by the book in the case and dismisses any suggestion Borders could be innocent. The case is thrown out by the end of the season and Borders remains incarcerated.

Bosch despises Borders, so it is very unlikely he hired him to kill Dockweiler in Bosch: Legacy's season 2 ending. Bosch has shown he will go to extreme lengths to protect his family, but enlisting a serial killer to kill Maddie's kidnapper feels like a step too far. Preston Borders' return to the Bosch universe is likely a set-up for a future story in Season 3, as this character does appear numerous times in Michael Connelly's book series.
