Sasuke Uchiha is one of the main characters of the Naruto franchise and he remains to be an important character even in the sequel of Naruto, that is, Boruto. Of course, a character as big as Sasuke would always be important in Boruto and he has certainly played somewhat of a big role in the series. However, Sasuke has largely been disappointing in Boruto, much to the dismay of fans.

Shibai is the strongest of all the Otsutsuki and here is what fans need to know about him.
His character has stagnated quite a lot and, at the same time, nerfed tremendously. Sasuke is one of the many characters who were treated horribly in Boruto and, what's worse is that he even had his Rinnegan stripped from him. However, in the future of Boruto, Sasuke can potentially regain his Rinnegan.
Sasuke's Role In Boruto
Sasuke Uchiha has been somewhat important in Boruto, especially in the beginning parts of the story. Sasuke was tracking down the traces of the Otsutsuki Clan and it was he who brought forth news about Momoshiki and Kinshiki. Sasuke then took part in the fighting against these powerful beasts and, together with Naruto, succeeded in destroying them. He also took a very important role as the mentor of Boruto Uzumaki and that was certainly very important for his character, as well as for the series itself. Of course, at this point, Sasuke was at the pinnacle of his powers. He was one of the strongest ninjas to have ever lived and the only one worthy of rivaling Naruto Uzumaki. Both Naruto and Sasuke were the strongest in the world and the ones responsible for defending the planet against the threat of the Otsutsuki and the dangers of Kara.
That said, the story didn't treat them as kindly as one would have wished. Naruto Uzumaki ended up losing his powers and Sasuke was treated in the same manner. In fact, Sasuke was given an even smaller role and, for the vast majority of the story, he was not even around. This became a problem down the line for the fans as their favorites simply weren't acting like themselves and, at the same time, nerfed at every possible opportunity. Essentially, Sasuke's role in Boruto was just to bring news about the Otsutsuki and train Boruto Uzumaki to reach the next level, a job that wasn't even properly handled.
How Sasuke Lost His Rinnegan
In Boruto, both Naruto and Sasuke were both tremendously nerfed just for the next generation of ninjas to get the chance to showcase their skills. Of course, it is needed for the next generation to be at the center of attention, given that the story is about them. However, their progress and growth should not come at the expense of old characters that have already been established as fan favorites. This is especially true for characters who are held in a legendary light and those who have been the most important ones in the series, as they are the only reason why a sequel exists in the first place.

Regardless of that, the authors of Boruto chose to nerf Sasuke tremendously. He ended up losing his Rinnegan in the fight against Isshiki Otsutsuki. To make things worse, it wasn't even Isshiki who ended up taking his eye. It was none other than Boruto Uzumaki, who was possessed by Momoshiki at the time. Shortly after the fight had concluded, Momoshiki decided to blind Sasuke by shoving a Kunai deep into his eye, taking his Rinnegan from him forever. After the fight concluded, Sasuke realized that he was not as strong anymore and he also warned Naruto that they would now face perilous times, given that their powers had been taken from them.
Sasuke's Current Strength
Currently, Sasuke Uchiha isn't all that powerful. The Rinnegan was his only source of Six Paths Powers and now he has lost it. His biggest strength right now is his Mangekyo Sharingan and fans know that while this eye is tremendously powerful, it isn't enough to combat against the strength of the likes of the Otsutsuki, or, even against the members of Kara or other high-tier fighters in the Naruto world. That said, Sasuke could have strengthened himself over the timeskip of Boruto.
During the 3-year timeskip, Sasuke and Boruto Uzumaki went over the ninja world in an attempt to get stronger. Fans have seen Boruto Uzumaki return stronger than ever before and he was able to fight against Code and completely overwhelm him in combat. However, when it comes to Sasuke, fans have not seen him after the timeskip and it remains difficult to tell exactly how strong he currently is.
Fans will have to wait quite a bit to see if he has hit the next level or if he is still nerfed. It is also possible that Sasuke simply died and the timeskip of Boruto and, given how his character has been handled over the years, it shouldn't come as a massive surprise to any fan. While the chances of that happening are low, they aren't zero, so fans should certainly be wary of any development regarding his character. One thing that is clear, however, is that Sasuke isn't among the strongest or even close to them at the moment. With just his Mangekyo Sharingan, he is not even as strong as he was in Naruto Shippuden.
How Sasuke Can Regain His Rinnegan
While one might think that Sasuke is completely out of options and the character is forever going to be weak, fans might be in for a surprise. There are certainly ways in which Sasuke can receive his Rinnegan once again. Fans have already seen eyes being restored in the world of Naruto before. This was performed by Naruto Uzumaki on Kakashi and his original eye was restored to him using Six Paths Powers. Of course, Naruto does not possess these Six Paths Powers anymore, even though he should. Yet, there is another way in which Sasuke can regain his eye and that is through the power of Omnipotence.
Omnipotence is a Shinjitsu that brings anything that the user wills to reality. This is the power that was used for Boruto and Kawaki to switch lives and it is a power that Momoshiki believed has been used many times throughout history to change the memories of humans and their experiences as well. Of course, to utilize this power, Ada's cooperation would be needed. However, it is certainly possible for that to happen. Using the power of Omnipotence, Sasuke can regain his Rinnegan and Naruto can regain the power of Kurama. These two characters can return to relevance using this powerful Shinjitsu. Even though it is not highly likely for that to happen, the possibilities remain and that is what fans are clinging to at the moment.
For any major development regarding the character of Sasuke to take place, fans will have to sit back and wait. For now, the focus should be on his return and, after that, the story can focus on whether Sasuke will ever return to his prime or not.
