The Naruto Franchise has set a clear precedent in terms of defining power and strength, putting visual prowess far above any other ability or power. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that the sequel Boruto: Naruto Next Generations follows the same narrative, putting emphasis on the unfettered power that Dojutsu possess. This was witnessed in the form of an entirely new ocular jutsu entering the scene – the Jogan.

As the Jogan primarily belongs to the Otsutsuki Clan, it is said that its power goes far beyond the previously known Three Great Dojutsu; Sharingan, Byakugan, and Rinnegan. Currently, Boruto is the only character that possesses these eyes outside the Otsutsuki Clan, a feat that in itself is quite commendable. While the mysterious circumstances under which he was able to activate the visual technique are only vaguely known, it's still worthwhile to compare this new Dojutsu's strength to the previous three strongest ones.

The Jogan: An Overview

Boruto's Jogan

Another addition to the series’ visual techniques, the Jogan is the Otsutsuki Clan's special Dojutsu, possessing unique capabilities that rival the strength of the Three Great Dojutsu. The eye was first revealed when Boruto accidentally activated it during his academy, yet he could only activate it involuntarily. It wasn’t until much later that he finally mastered control over the Dojutsu, which further revealed the secrets of this all-powerful eye.

The Dojutsu boasts a rather unique appearance, with a light blue shade and a barely visible pupil, circled with a darkened sclera. Its appearance is quite reminiscent of the Byakugan, yet the light blue color scheme sets it apart. While little is known of the visual jutsu’s true strength, some of its primary abilities have been revealed. Its current abilities seem to be a mix of the Byakugan, Sharingan, and the Rinnegan, as the Jogan possesses the ability to sense chakra pathways, sense barriers connecting different dimensions, and sense chakra in general.

Currently, Boruto possesses the Jogan in only one eye, meaning its true strength can only be revealed when the visual jutsu activates in both eyes. It is speculated that its power goes far beyond what the series has revealed so far, and with the possibility of the Jogan awakening in Boruto’s other eye, the possibilities are limitless. Still, a comparison with the current three strongest dojutsu is worthwhile in terms of revealing the Jogan's potential.

Comparison With the Byakugan

Byakugan

Currently, the Jogan seems to be the most similar to the Byakugan, especially with its chakra pathway sensing capabilities. Since Boruto is a direct descendant of the Hyuga, the possibility of the Jogan bearing a link with the Byakugan is not unlikely. However, the creators of the series have officially debunked this theory, stating that the two Dojutsu bear no genetic link.

In terms of strengths and abilities, the Jogan is clearly superior with its wide range of powers, yet its primary ability is chakra sensing and revealing chakra pathways. This has led many to believe that the two Dojutsu may be closer than one may think, despite what the creators have stated. As for now, the Jogan clearly stands as the stronger Dojutsu with its powers that go far beyond what the Byakugan can achieve.

Comparison With the Sharingan

Mangekyo Sharingan

Many have referred to the Sharingan as one of the strongest Dojutsu in the entire anime series, even rivaling the Rinnegan, yet the Jogan has disputed this status quo with its almost god-like powers. Some of the Jogan’s abilities such as its chakra tracking abilities seem quite similar to the Sharingan, yet its other space-time powers allow it to easily triumph over it.

The Mangekyo Sharingan is a close contender, especially with abilities such as Kamui, Tsukuyomi, and Kotoamatsukami, yet it still falls short of achieving the same strength as the Jogan. While little has been revealed about the visual jutsu, there may also be a possibility that the Sharingan’s genjutsu might not even work on the Jogan, setting a precedent as the stronger Dojutsu.

Comparison with the Rinnegan

Sasuke's Rinnegan

The Rinnegan was previously known as the strongest Dojutsu out of Three Great Dojutsu, yet it seems that its reign as the strongest may finally come to an end. The Rinnegan’s Six Path abilities are almost god-like, as raining meteors from the sky and casting planetary devastation is quite hard to rival.

At the Jougaun’s current level, the Rinnegan still seems to be the stronger Dojutsu, however, it's only a matter of time before the true strength of the Jogan is revealed, with speculations that it may go far beyond the powers of the Rinnegan. Till then, it seems that the Rinnegan is set to remain as the strongest Dojutsu in the Boruto series, with the Jogan just slightly paling in comparison to its absurd strength.
