In the Borderlands universe, some of the most powerful characters are the Sirens - women enhanced with magical powers, who are born with strange tattoos that cover their bodies. Not a whole lot is known about the Sirens, except only six can exist in the universe at any given time (according to Handsome Jack, anyway), and they have some kind of connection to the Eridians and the Vaults. Over the course of the Borderlands franchise, we have met four Sirens, with two more making their debut in the upcoming Borderlands 3.

Borderlands 3 may very well reveal even more information on the Sirens and their role in the franchise's lore. While they wait for more of the Siren mystery to be revealed, those excited for Borderlands 3 can reacquaint themselves with all of the known Sirens introduced in the games so far. Please note that this article will have spoilers for the Borderlands franchise up to Borderlands 3.

1. Lilith

what happened in borderlands 2?

Lilith was a playable character in the first Borderlands, making her one of the four original Vault Hunters. In subsequent games, Lilith was given an expanded role, eventually becoming the leader of the Crimson Raiders. In the Commander Lilith and the Fight for Sanctuary DLC, Lilith uses Eridium to greatly enhance her abilities so that she can defeat Colonel Hector, but Sanctuary is destroyed in the process. Lilith will continue to play a central role in Borderlands 3, as she leads the search for the Vault Key and all of the Vaults that were discovered at the end of Borderlands 2.

2. Commandant Steele

The main antagonist of the first Borderlands, Commandant Steele is the leader of the Crimson Lance. She doesn't display much of her Siren abilities in the game until then, when she manages to put together the Vault Key and unleash the Destroyer. Unfortunately for Steele, the Destroyer winds up killing her. She is later  reborn as a robot in the Claptrap's New Robot Revolution expansion for the first Borderlands, only to be killed again by the Vault Hunters.

Assuming Handsome Jack is right about there only ever being six Sirens existing at any given time, that means that Commandant Steele's death leaves the door open for a new Siren to replace her. However, we only know of five other Sirens besides Steele (and one of them is also dead), so Gearbox has yet to reveal the Siren that will take Steele's spot in Borderlands lore.

3. Maya

borderlands who are the sirens

Maya is the playable Siren character in Borderlands 2. Her abilities differ from Lilith's a bit, as Maya is able to Phaselock enemies, which essentially freezes them in place and leaves them vulnerable to attacks. Maya also lacks the ability to charge Vault Keys, which is something that other Sirens seem able to do. This could mean that Maya is a comparatively weaker Siren, but it's possible that her abilities will be expanded on in Borderlands 3.

4. Angel

Angel is a Siren who communicates with the Vault Hunters throughout the first two Borderlands games, guiding them on their quests for Vaults. Angel is an especially powerful Siren, and her lack of control over her abilities tragically caused the death of her mother. Angel's father, the villainous Handsome Jack, eventually harnesses her abilities for his own advantage, but keeps her in captivity in the process. Eventually, the Vault Hunters make their way to Angel, and she asks them to kill her so that Jack doesn't use her powers to charge the Vault Key and open the Vault. They oblige, killing Angel in what is one of the saddest Borderlands deaths.

As is the case with Commandant Steele, Angel's death means that there is a spot for another Siren to join the ranks, but the identity of the new Siren to replace Angel has yet to be revealed.

5. Amara

borderlands 3 siren amara

When it comes to the new Vault Hunters for Borderlands 3, Amara fills the role of the Siren class. Amara is a much more physically-imposing Siren than the playable Sirens that preceded her, and is able to generate huge arms that she can use to take out her opponents. Fans can expect to learn a lot more about Amara once Borderlands 3 launches on September 13.

6. Tyreen Calypso

Calypso Twins in Borderlands 3

The sixth Siren that we have seen in the Borderlands series is Tyreen Calypso, one half of the Calypso Twins, Borderlands 3's main villains. Like Amara, not a whole lot is known about Tyreen Calypso just yet, but fans can expect to learn a lot more about her character come Borderlands 3's launch.

Borderlands 3 launches on September 13 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One, with a Stadia version also in development.
