Highlights

  • Gearbox has released a new Shift code for Borderlands games, giving players free Diamond, Golden, and Skeleton Keys.
  • The Shift code allows players to obtain more powerful weapons, adding to the loot-focused gameplay of the franchise.
  • Players have until January 4, 2024, to redeem the Shift code and take advantage of the free Keys.

Fans of the Borderlands series have been given a holiday gift by Gearbox, with a brand-new Shift code that entitles players to free Diamond, Golden, and Skeleton Keys in games across the franchise. The most recent Borderlands Shift code giveaway came in November, but now there's another great opportunity for anyone who missed out last time around.

As a series, the gameplay of Borderlands has always been extremely loot-focused. The games reward dumping old weapons for the next shiny thing, often with the promise of more damage. Shift codes (and the Keys that are given as a result) are just an extension of that, giving players the opportunity to win free weapons that are usually more powerful than their current ones. Like all loot in Borderlands, using these is still a total lottery. Players might end up with one of the most impractical weapons in Borderlands, or one of the strongest - that's a huge part of the appeal.

Borderlands 3 Has One Gun Motif That Will Be Hard for BL4 to Top

Borderlands 3 boosted its gun game by furthering a specific type of thematic weapon, and set a high bar for BL4 to one-up.

The Shift code was posted to Twitter in celebration of the holiday season by Randy Pitchford, the CEO of the Gearbox Entertainment Company. By entering the code "HX63J-TCXKB-33BTJ-TBBJJ-FTB5H" either in-game or on the Shift website, players can redeem Diamond, Golden, and Skeleton Keys across several of the best games in the Borderlands series. Players who want to use the Shift code have until January 4, 2024 to claim it, so there's still some time before the code becomes inactive. As the Shift code is totally free to enter, anyone currently playing through any of the Borderlands games included should definitely take advantage of this.

Borderlands Shift Key Unlocks (December 2023)

  • 1 Diamond Key for Borderlands 3
  • 3 Golden Keys for Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, 2, and 3
  • 3 Skeleton Keys for Tiny Tina's Wonderlands

After using the Shift codes, players must then use the respective Keys in different areas across the Borderlands games. For example, Diamond Keys in Borderlands 3 can be redeemed in the Diamond Armory, while Golden Keys in the same game can be used at the Golden Chest in Sanctuary 3. Meanwhile, players of Borderlands 2 must use the Golden Chest in Sanctuary, with the Mysterious Chest in Concordia being the location in The Pre-Sequel. Finally, Skeleton Keys in Tiny Tina's Wonderlands can be redeemed at the Skeleton Chest in Brighthoof.

While it's great to see the previous games in the franchise being supported, it remains to be seen when a potential Borderlands 4's release window will be. The game is yet to be officially announced, but the series remains extremely popular among gamers, so it would be a surprise if it was not in development at Gearbox Software. Recent spin-off titles Tiny Tina's Wonderlands and New Tales from the Borderlands confirm a desire from publisher 2K to keep the franchise alive, and hopefully, it isn't too long until gamers begin to hear about the next mainline entry into the franchise.
