Earlier this year, it was revealed that the Borderlands franchise would be receiving a movie adaptation directed by Eli Roth and penned by Chernobyl Writer Craig Mazin. News on that front has been relatively quite for the past few months, until a new report surfaced today.

According to sources speaking to Variety, the Borderlands movie is eyeing Cate Blanchett to take on the role of Lilith. Many may know Blanchett from the on-going Mrs. America mini-series, while she was also filming Guillermo del Toro's Nightmare Alley before production was stalled by the pandemic. Another role many may recognize her from is Galadriel in the Lord of the Rings films.

Lionsgate has made no comment regarding the veracity of this report, but while this means it should be taken with a grain of salt, it's coming from an incredibly reliable source. Outside this, very little is still known about the film as it's likely still in its earliest stages, other than the Borderlands film wanting cosplayers for on-screen deaths. Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford and Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick are the film's executive productions, and neither have really commented on the film as of late.

For Borderlands fans, though, there's plenty to keep busy with. Borderlands 3 just released its second DLC Guns, Love, and Tentacles not too long ago, with a few events currently taking place in the game. Revenge of the Cartels currently has players helping Maurice with his debt, and DLC 3 however far is still on the horizon. Many fans of the franchise are likely trying to figure out which Borderlands character will appear as a NPC, not necessarily unlike the characters in the movie.

Lilith's confirmation is something, though, whether or not Cate Blanchett takes on the role. It's uncertain if this is an original movie set in the Borderlands universe, an adaptation of one of the games, or any other number of possibilities. The most likely to be adapted is Borderlands 2 due to the sheer popularity of Handsome Jack, but that's pure speculation. Nonetheless, with Lilith looking to be cast, it seems like a matter of time before someone is sought after for Mordecai, Brick, and perhaps Roland and other Vault Hunters, depending on the movie.

The Borderlands movie is in the works.
