The upcoming Borderlands film has fans pretty excited, as recent months have brought a slew of successful video game adaptations to the big and small screen. Yesterday, it was announced that Eli Roth would be directing Borderlands, and now, fans know who will be handling the film's script as well.

Craig Mazin, a two-time Emmy Award-winning screenwriter, is working on Borderlands' script. Mazin's most recent well-known work is Chernobyl, the HBO mini-series that released to massive critical and fan acclaim. However, Mazin's move to dramatic film and television is fairly recent, as the writer has previously worked on films like Scary Movie 4 and The Hangover series.

Mazin is a good fit for the Borderlands movie. His experience with both drama and comedy should make for an effective story in the Borderlands universe– so long as the film is handled correctly. Sonic the Hedgehog has performed well at theatres thus far, which has given some renewed interest in video game adaptations on the big screen.

Details about the film are incredibly scarce right now. There are plenty of places that the movie could go, as the Borderlands universe expanded quite a bit with Borderlands 3, but neither Mazin nor Roth have spilled any major bits of information in regards to the film. There are, without a doubt, fans that would want to see an on-screen adaptation of Handsome Jack, one of the best video game villains of all time, but there will likely be some time before fans actually learn anything solid.

Put together, Roth and Mazin may prove to be a strong team. Video game movies still have something of a bad reputation, but that's slowly starting to get better. While not based off the games, The Witcher Netflix series was so good it caused a spike in game sales, and there's a good chance that the Borderlands movie could have a similar effect on Borderlands 3.

For now, fans will have to wait patiently for any new information about the film. It's still in pre-production, so there's still going to be quite some time before anything solid is revealed, but it may prove to be a worthwhile addition to the Borderlands mythos.

Borderlands is currently in pre-production.
