Best Games Like Borderlands

If you're awaiting Borderlands 4 or simply want a palette cleanser, these games should be able to scratch a similar loot-driven itch.

Whether they would play an important role in the story, or just simply pop up for a quick cameo, some characters are so integral to the world of Borderlands that they deserve to share some of the spotlight in the upcoming movie. With that said, if any Borderlands characters would perfectly fit into the cast of the live-action movie, these individuals would have to be at the top of the list.

1 Typhon DeLeon

The First Vault Hunter Could Play A Pivotal Role If He Were To Appear As A Side Character

Developer(s)

Genre(s)
First-Person Shooter , Action , RPG

The first ever Vault Hunter, Typhone DeLeon, is a quirky and charismatic man who is regarded as somewhat of a legend among his fellow hunters. Rather than seeking out the Vault for his own greed or reputation, Typhon simply wanted to explore the world, and after becoming curious as to the Vault's contents, he decided to find out what exactly was so special about it for himself.

Typhon does admittedly appear much later on during the third game of the series, but considering that the characters in the movie are still searching for the Vault, the ex-hunter himself could pop up to drop a few hints about where the Vault is, and what the hunters might find once they reach it. It's unlikely that Typhon would play a big role if he was featured, but his Vault expertise would still prove to be incredibly useful even if he were to make just a small cameo.

2 Brick

The "Slab King" Is So Well Known Around Pandora, It's Only Fitting That He Would Show Up In Some Capacity

As a founding member of the Crimson Raiders and the leader of the Slabs, Brick is one of the most well-known and recognizable individuals in the world of Borderlands, and as his name suggests, he's also renowned for being hard as nails and very tough to take down. During the events of the first game, Brick becomes a valued member of the original Vault Hunter team, but he also appears in the Pre-Sequel where he once again teams up with his friend Mordecai to try and stop Athena's execution.

The Borderlands franchise has tons of incredible games for players to explore, but some entries are more entertaining than others.

Brick's passion for beating up anyone who stands in the way of him and his mission could make for some pretty action-packed fight scenes if he were to appear, and since Roland is already confirmed to be in the movie, it would only make sense that his Crimson Raider comrade would also show up in some capacity. Either way, as iconic as Brick is among the Borderlands fanbase, it would be a real shame not to include him in some way or another, even if it's just to punch a few psychos.

3 Athena

Athena's Thirst For Revenge Could Shed Some Light On The Tyrannical Atlas Corporation

Athena with her hood up

After being forced to become an assassin from a young age and becoming a top operative of the Crimson Lance private military, Athena eventually turned her back on the Atlas Corporation and joined up with a rag-tag band of Vault Hunters to enact her revenge. Although a lot of her past has been kept a mystery, what is made very clear is that Athena is not someone to be messed with, proving herself to be more than capable of holding her own thanks to her gladiator-like weapons and fighting style.

Although Athena swears vengeance on the Atlas Corporation, she still has a fairly complicated relationship with Handsome Jack, which doesn't make her quite as squeaky clean as some of the other Vault Hunters, something which could be very interesting to expand upon in the movie if they both make an appearance. She could even act as a sort of anti-hero who could reluctantly ally with the Vault Hunters, only to further her vendetta.

4 Mordecai

Being Able To See Mordecai And His Loyal Bloodwing Teaming Up One Final Time Would Be A Great Love Letter To Fans

Mordecai with his Bloodwing on his arm

Having appeared in every single Borderlands game, including the spin-offs, it's fair to say that Mordecai is quite the fan-favorite character. Commonly referred to as "The Hunter," Mordecai never leaves the house without his trusty sniper rifle, and his loyal companion known as Bloodwing, who helps his master in taking down enemies and scavenging their precious loot. Mordecai plays a pretty big role in the story, having been one of the original Vault Hunters and eventually taking over control of the Crimson Raiders, all while keeping a close eye on the whereabouts of other Vaults in the universe.

Of course, seeing Mordecai's Bloodwing in live-action would be a massive treat for fans of the series, but considering how strong the bond is between the small dragon and its master, there's even potential for this to provide an emotional beat to the story, just as it does in the games when Mordecai is forced to take down his companion. Additionally, since none of the main cast are technically marksmen in the traditional sense, including Mordecai would also give the perfect excuse to see a few iconic enemies getting their heads popped off, which is something that no Borderlands fan is ever going to object to.

5 Maya

Arguably the most beloved playable character from the entire franchise, Maya initially starts as somewhat of a bitter and cold character at the beginning of Borderlands 2, but throughout her long and arduous journey, she eventually starts to dedicate her otherworldy powers to protecting those around her. Not only does she manage to make amends with Krieg, which is certainly saying something considering how hostile he can be to strangers, but Maya also makes a promise that she will protect her homeworld of Athenas the best she can and even goes as far as to take Ava under her wing, even after the naive teenager tried to steal from her.

Although many fans enjoyed Maya's character due to her incredibly engaging character arc and unique Siren powers, there was a lot of disappointment at the fact that she never got to continue her journey after being killed off in Borderlands 3. Therefore, it would be a nice love letter to fans for her to show up in the movie, potentially as a supporting character who can help assist the Vault Hunters in their journey.

6 Handsome Jack

If Any Villain Deserves To Make A Live-Action Appearance, It Has To Be The Wise-Cracking Handsome Jack

handsome jack president of hyperion

While it hasn't been made clear who exactly the main villain of the live-action adaptation is going to be yet, out of the large roster of antagonists who could fill this spot, there's one who stands tall as the perfect candidate: Handsome Jack. The endlessly charismatic and witty CEO of Hyperion manages to steal every scene he's in thanks to his quirky antics and humorous dialogue. Underneath his jovial exterior though, Jack is a merciless individual who isn't above manipulating and killing anyone who stands in the way of his goals, leading him to commit some truly despicable acts throughout the series.

Considering that the movie is embracing the brash and chaotic nature of the Borderlands games, it means that Handsome Jack with his clever one-liners and quippy remarks would perfectly suit the tone of the film. It would also just be a lot of fun seeing how an actor would decide to take on the role, considering how larger-than-life Jack is as an antagonist. Considering that Angel plays a very big part in leading the Vault Hunters during the first game, this would also be the perfect opportunity to showcase the twisted relationship between her and Jack, which isn't touched upon too much in the games.
