UPDATE 8/11: A Genvid spokesperson has released this statement on the situation:

"Actor Angie Jho Lee is a voice actor on Genvid Entertainment’s upcoming interactive streaming series, Borderlands EchoVision Live, which was announced at San Diego Comic-Con last month. While the series takes place within the Borderlands universe and is made in partnership with Gearbox Entertainment, it is not a Borderlands game. We reached out to Angie and asked her to make this change on her personal account to reflect the accurate role with the interactive series. More information on Borderlands EchoVision Live can be found in this press release as well as its official website here."

Clearly, the Borderlands 4 rumors are based on a misunderstanding. Needless to say, fans should not expect to see Borderlands 4 release this holiday season as was rumored.

Original story follows.

A new rumor making the rounds online suggests that Borderlands 4 will launch holiday 2023 with a new character named Aiyumi. Borderlands 3 released in 2019, and with a seven-year gap between Borderlands 2 and the third game, fans of the franchise are certainly prepared to wait a long time to play the next big looter-shooter game from Gearbox.

While it's been four years since Borderlands 3 first launched, fans of the franchise have had plenty to keep them busy since then. Gearbox supported Borderlands 3 with many post-launch updates and sizable expansion packs. It also worked to bring the game to new-gen consoles after the PS5 and Xbox Series X were out. Borderlands fans were also treated to Tiny Tina's Wonderlands, a spin-off game inspired by the Tiny Tina's Assault on Dragonkeep expansion for Borderlands 3.

Besides the Borderlands movie on the horizon, it seems franchise fans may also be able to count on an eventual Borderlands 4. The resume and LinkedIn profile for actress Angie Jho Lee claims that she is playing a character named Aiyumi in Borderlands 4, with the game itself set for a holiday 2023 release. Fans should take this information with a grain of salt, however. It would be rather shocking to find out Borderlands 4 is releasing this holiday season when the game hasn't even been announced yet. Perhaps that was the plan for its original release window, but the game will actually be coming out in 2024 or beyond.

Then again, some game developers have found great success announcing games and then releasing them just a few months later. One of the most notable examples of this would be Fallout 4, which had a massive unveiling at E3 2015 and released that same year. Perhaps Gearbox is planning on some kind of big unveiling at PAX West or something, though fans shouldn't hold their breath that they will get to see Borderlands 4 this year, let alone play it.

It's also possible that the game referenced isn't actually Borderlands 4. Some leaks have suggested that Gearbox is releasing a new Borderlands collection. Maybe Aiyumi is a new character that will be featured in the collection somehow, and Borderlands 4 was named as a mistake. All fans can do is speculate until official word comes from Gearbox.

Borderlands 4 is rumored to be in development.
