The following contains spoilers for Borderlands 2 and Borderlands 3 .

The Borderlands series is full of memorable and eccentric characters, some of whom are playable but most of whom players encounter as they play through each story. From the quirky and darkly comedic Tiny Tina to the charismatic and violent Handsome Jack, the Borderlands franchise has established a variety of unforgettable icons. That being said, there may not be many characters quite like those who appeared in the first Borderlands game that started it all. Brick, Mordecai, Lilith, and Roland are the four playable characters from the first Borderlands title and have continued to appear in subsequent installments to assist players in their endeavors. Of those four, however, Brick and Mordecai have been given the short end of the stick as of late, and Borderlands 4 should make sure they receive some love.

After the events of Borderlands 3, Brick and Mordecai are the only two remaining Vault Hunters from the first game, although Gearbox has confirmed that Lilith is alive. In Borderlands 2, Roland is ambushed and killed by Handsome Jack's forces while attempting to secure a Vault Key, which leaves only Brick and Mordecai. Unfortunately, they have been put on the back burner lately, despite the prominent role they played in the first Borderlands game. This leaves the very important task of redeeming these past injustices in the hands of Borderlands 4, which has recently been confirmed by Gearbox to be in development.

Borderlands 4 Needs to Give Brick and Mordecai Some Love

Brick and Mordecai Played a Small Role in Borderlands 3

Brick and Mordecai have been shown some tough love recently, and that includes the most recent mainline Borderlands installment, Borderlands 3. The two beloved Vault Hunters did make an appearance in the game, but their roles are extremely minor in comparison to previous games. In fact, their only real role of prominence in Borderlands 3 is during the "Hammerlocked" mission. Apart from that, they help out with only a handful of side quests.

Brick and Mordecai Are Missing From the Live-Action Borderlands Film

Despite both Lilith and Roland appearing in the live-action Borderlands film, Brick and Mordecai are seemingly nowhere to be found. This upsetting news, as well as the casting controversy surrounding the film, have shrouded the upcoming project in negative comments from loyal fans of the video game franchise. Arguably, if Lilith and Roland are both characters in the film, then Brick and Mordecai should have been too. After all, it would have been a heartwarming homecoming for all four of the series' original Vault Hunters to play a central role in the film's story.

Brick and Mordecai Should Play a Prominent Role in the Search for Lilith in Borderlands 4

At the end of Borderlands 3, Lilith sacrifices herself to save Pandora and its moon, Elpis, and she was once presumed dead because of it. However, Gearbox has confirmed on multiple occasions that Lilith is indeed alive, which seems to be a hint at which direction the story of Borderlands 4 could go. Ava and many others are shown searching for Lilith in the aftermath of Borderlands 3's ending, so it would make sense to see Brick and Mordecai, her old friends, play a significant role in locating her whereabouts in Borderlands 4. Perhaps they could even once again be playable characters in a storytelling move that would double as fan service.

It's clearly high time that Brick and Mordecai were shown some love, and Borderlands 4 is undoubtedly the most opportune time for the series to do so. The pair's absence in the upcoming live-action film and their very small role in the most recent mainline Borderlands installment are quite sad occurrences that should be rectified soon. Thankfully, Borderlands 4 has a chance to make up for that loss.
