While Borderlands 3 may not end up with the incredibly long lifespan that Borderlands 2 had, it has received no shortage of extra content. With two full Season Passes bringing new game modes, skill trees, and expansions, players have sunk a lot of time into Borderlands 3. As such, it is a bit sad to see support for the game winding down, with Gearbox moving on to new projects in the franchise.

With the level cap being raised to 72 and the only planned content left for the game being the two remaining Vault Cards, players only have a few new gear pieces and cosmetics to be excited for. However, while it will be sad for some players to say goodbye to the third Borderlands, there are some exciting things on the horizon. With Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands launching early next year, and Borderlands 4 rumors already beginning to appear, gamers have two huge projects to anticipate and theorize about.

Why Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands Is Exciting

Tiny Tina's Wonderlands

With Borderlands 2’s Assault on Dragon Keep DLC being one of the most popular expansions to ever release for the series, the reveal that the next Borderlands game would share the Fantasy setting was exciting. With Tiny Tina back in charge of the narrative, the Dungeons and Dragons-like storytelling should bring fans plenty of laughs and surprises. With a strong voice cast announced and a few new enemies teased, the spinoff is promising.

Not only is the game more appealing due to the limited screen time Tiny Tina got in Borderlands 3, but new features like the multi-class system could give players a lot of variety in how they play. Spells sound like an interesting alternative to grenades, while there is plenty of potential in Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands’ character customization. The game is not far from release, either, as its early 2022 launch window ensures that gamers will be gunning down goblins and wyverns sooner rather than later.

Why Borderlands 4 Is Exciting

While Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands’ cross-gen status means that it will not be making significant changes to the visuals and core features of Borderlands, the game that follows surely will. Borderlands 4 has been rumored to be in development, and while Gearbox is likely only in the earliest stages of its creation, the game should be a major step forward for the series. While this is only speculation, a next-gen only release seems likely, meaning that players can expect some major visual and technical improvements with the sequel.

A proper Borderlands 4 also allows Gearbox to address certain fan criticisms from the third game. While the Director’s Cut DLC improved Ava, the fourth game could do even more to redeem her. It could also feature better villains than The Calypso Twins, with a foe introduced that can live up to Handsome Jack’s legacy. With Borderlands 3 plot holes able to be filled, including the whereabouts of Athena and The Watcher’s War, the next mainline entry could be about a lot more than just finding Lilith.

With even a Borderlands movie on the way, the franchise is not slowing down in the slightest. As such, while it may be sad to see the spotlight moving away from Borderlands 3, it could be moving on to bigger and better things. With both Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands and Borderlands 4 able to deliver on things that players wanted from Borderlands 3, like an abundance of raid bosses and answers to major questions like Zer0’s origins, there is a lot to look forward to. While Borderlands 3 content is dwindling, fans should be optimistic about the franchise’s future.

Borderlands 3 is available now on PC, PS4 PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
