When it arrives next month, Borderlands 3 will be bringing with it a fair number of ways for players to tweak their Vault Hunters’ appearances. For some, this will be as important as figuring out their Vault Hunter's skill trees, and as such, they’re hoping that Gearbox Software won’t skimp out on the cosmetic customization options.

Speaking with Borderlands 3 fans online, Art Director Scott Kester addressed the matter. Specifically, he was asked how far Gearbox is planning on taking the game’s customization options and whether there will be any character skins that will fully change up a Vault Hunter’s appearance from top to bottom, as opposed to merely tweaking parts of the character’s look. In response, Kester explained,

“From the start of the ‘customization talk’ on Borderlands 3 , I wanted to push the aesthetics further and more dramatic than we ever have. It was important to get crazier with heads and skins, to support that gamut between really ‘cool’ and really ‘silly.’ I feel like we hit that goal.”

After that, he went on to confirm that Borderlands 3 will include “crazy heads, animated skins, and even the option to change the colors on any skins in the game!” For the time being, though, it appears that Gearbox isn’t actively planning anything as ambitious as full-on body-changing character skins. Kester did go on to admit that the idea of fully body changes is a cool idea.

It’s no surprise Borderlands 3 is paying attention to its character's customization options. Few franchises can boast about having as distinct a cast as Borderlands. Naturally, players gravitate toward the playable characters and discuss with each other which Vault Hunter they should main.

For the time being, fans with an eye for customization can look forward to the cosmetic options that will be available when Borderlands 3 comes out, whether in-game or as a bonus. Among them will be the red-and-black-themed Retro Cosmetic Pack and the glowing-skeleton-themed Neon Cosmetic Pack, both of which will be available as part of the game’s Deluxe Edition. It might not be as ambitious as some fans want, but it’s a start at least.

Borderlands 3 comes out on September 13 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One. A Google Stadia version is also in development.
