BoJack Horseman season 7 didn't happen because Netflix felt that season 6 of the hit show should be its last. In an interview with Vulture, creator Raphael Bob-Waksberg shared the story behind deciding that it was time to conclude the TV series. He said that when he wrote a definitive season 1 finale, Netflix said to be more "open-ended." He ensured that every season finale felt satisfying but still left room for more stories to be explored in the next season. Bob-Waksberg asked if Netflix would let him know when the show should end so he could make sure that the series finale was a proper one. He said of BoJack Horseman season 7:

"I said I would appreciate it if I could have the forewarning to give the show a proper finale, and not set up some cliffhangers that will never pay off."

While BoJack Horseman has a large fanbase, the season 6 finale felt satisfying. Unlike many disappointing TV series finales, BoJack Horseman wrapped up the main character's sad story bravely and boldly.

In an interview with Variety about the fact that BoJack Horseman season 7 didn't happen, Raphael Bob-Waksberg shared his favorite episodes and talked about the series finale. In season 6, episode 11, "The View From Halfway Down," BoJack relapses and begins dreaming about his life and the people in it. Bob-Waskberg shared that fans can interpret the last episode in two ways: some will think BoJack has passed away and others think that he will wake up. He said:

"Although, there are people who work on the show who have asked me if the final episode is real, and if he died. Which is not necessarily an ambiguity I was thinking about what when we were writing it, but people are going to interpret it the way they’re going to interpret it! If that’s what your takeaway is, well, alright. What does that mean for you?"
